Default My sister wants a PS3. Questions:

My sister has seen me with my PS3 since November and she finally can no longer resist.

Here's the questions:

1.) She's torn between making a move now vs. waiting until around Christmastime for a price drop.

2.) What's the word on this concept that the PS3 might see some cost cutting moves where the current hardware that allows full backwards compatibility might get "shortcutted" a little bit?

^^ That's based on a rumor I've heard on more than one occasion. Backwards game compatibility is important to her, especially when it comes to PS2 RPGs and such.

You all see where this is coming from?

Interesting, I got a call from my mom the other day saying

"Hey Brian, I am getting Fios installed the 28th I decided to make the move to HD, I figured while I was at it I would go ahead and get a blu-ray player too."

I sold her my BDP-1000 so she could get into blu-ray cheap with a stable player that has very few hours on it. I in turn purchased the BDPs300 with the money she gave me. Now she is upgrading to a 60" SXRD 1080p and re-doing her surround sound too

see the influence we have?

As for your sister, I would say now is the time to jump in. If the price goes down within 30 days, she can bring it back and price match. If it doesn't then she has had it for the last 30 days...ya dig?

Right? Even MY mom is starting to warm up to HD!

Indeed.

She feels kind of bad because a few months ago she bought a Sony 3100ES because her old DVD player kicked the bucket. Now she wants to get the PS3.

I'm going to try and help her sell the 3100ES. I know it would make her feel a LOT better if she can unload that thing for halfway decent money as a boost towards the PS3.

i agree. if she's tempted that much to get one, then she shouldn't deny herself, since it's almost a sin to deny bd. i'm sure she's going to make use of it when she buys it. so might as well go for the purchase.

I guess she's kind of worried that Sony is going do a price drop for Christmas. I told her that, at most, they might drop it a $100, if at all. She didn't seem to mind that either way IF she can unload that 3100ES she has now.

I'm sure there will be a price drop and probably bundles by xmas time. I don't think it will be more than 100 though.

All PS3's will be shipped with software emulation at some point. I'm not sure if it's already started in the US. The backwards compatibility is less but I believe that there is a list of compatible games I just can't search game sites at work. I'm sure Shin-Ra has it.

I really can't see a significant price drop for Christmas, especially with the news for Blu Ray we've been getting. If BD keeps getting pushed the way it has the last couple of weeks, Christmas time will be a very profitable time for BD and Sony, with or without a price drop. At some point the PS3 is going to go from a "cheap Blu Ray player" to being realized for what it is: a multimedia monster that is truly the centerpiece of your entertainment system, that has the aggressive support of its manufacturer to continually improve it. By Christmas time, hopefully the PS3 will see some quality games released and it will start to become a better value for those who really want the whole package and not just the BD nuts who use it, 99% of the time, to play movies. If Sony and the game producers come through for Christmas, $600 will still be a steal. But . . . if the price of BD player components are actually coming down and that is what is causing the price drops . . . more power to Sony, drop the price and sell a billion of 'em.

Got off track a little but . . . I dunno, it's like the time-value of money. She could enjoy her PS3 for six whole months, or she could wait to MAYBE save, at most $100. My enjoyment today is worth more than my longing and dissatisfaction for six months.

What BStecke said plus the current ones have the hardware BC. Not sure how long that will last. I assume IF there are any price drops it would be removal of the hardware BC, move to 65nm and bundles rather than anything too dramatic. But who knows really.

If I could justify it to the wife I'd go for another one now...but it will be XMAS time before that can happen.

http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/

Only game I've tested that isn't allowed to startup is Silent Hill 3 but I've not exactly been through all my PS2 games.

FFXII and Dragon Quest VIII certainly work, the handling of FFXII's FMV could be better though.

I've played MGS3 Subsistance all the way through on PS3, the framerate suffers a bit during some parts but it's perfectly playable.

I've not tested to see if MGS3's framerate or FFXII's FMV have been improved with 1.8 or 1.81 yet.

Bully like DQ8 seems to play with no problems whatsoever, there was a DVD-loading hitch when entering new areas but a firmware update before 1.8 fixed that up. Rez also plays perfectly.

Do it now before some HD-DVD fanboy gets a hold of her.

This you won't have to worry about.

She's pretty much on the same page with me on all of this...which means she and I both agree with everything that's been said in this thread.

I just need to find a way to help her unload that 3100ES. I guess videogon is the best choice for that...

One other thing to consider, if there is some price drop, and with new games coming out, it might be harder actually get one at Christmas time. That seems hard to believe right now since there is ample stock, but this XMas could be huge for PS3. Just something to think about.

This holiday season will be big for the PS3 since there was a shortage of it last year. It will be the very first holiday season where the "average joe" and not a fanatic can actually have a chance to get one so I really don't think Sony will do a price drop. Sony knows people will buy it at it's current price. The most you may get will be packages or add-ons.

Last year, the PS3 was considered overpriced! But with all the firmware updates, especially 1.8, it really has become a value product.

So, no, I don't think she should wait until the holiday season to get a PS3.

there is a very likely price drop coming up by the end of the year..

I'd expect the PS3 sales around the holidays to mirror the demand of a brand new console...since it will be pretty much a new console after Home comes out..
