Default Black Friday Forecast: Blu-ray Players For $149

http://www.tvpredictions.com/black091908.htm

Most likely if this price point really happens it will be for the discontinued profile 1.0 players.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if this prediction came true. We are already seeing clearance prices for good players in the low $200 range and I think BB carries a cheap Insignia brand player in that range MSRP.

Default Swanni predicts a $149 Blu Ray player for Black Friday

http://www.tvpredictions.com/black091908.htm

Quote:
How would you like a Blu-ray player for $149 or a $499 Plasma HDTV?

Those are just a few of the deals you'll likely see at retail stores on Black Friday, according to the site, DealNews.com.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. Retailers traditionally slash prices on that day to give the season a strong push-off. Last year, for instance, big-screen HDTVs were available for well under $1,000 at some stores while HD DVD players were slashed to $99.

DealNews.com predicts that Blu-ray players will be available this Black Friday for $149, with other Blu-ray players bundled with movies for $199. (The site does not say which brands will be available at those prices.)

The lowest suggested retail price for a Blu-ray player is now $399, although some discount stores and web sites are selling players for well under $300.

The site also forecasts that high-def sets prices will be cut sharply with 42-inch Plasma 720p HDTV available for as little as $499.

"A $699 50-inch Plasma HDTV is also quite likely, although we're not expecting huge discounts on larger Plasma screens," the site says. "LCD prices will remain higher than Plasma, but they'll still dip considerably, with generic 42-inch 720p LCD HDTVs going for $599. Additionally, look for name-brand 46" or 47" 1080p LCD HDTVs to hit $799, and larger 52" 1080p HDTVs to drop to $1,199."

However, DealNews.com warns that many retailers are more likely to cut HDTV prices closer to Christmas than on Black Friday.

"The general rule is, Black Friday is the best time of the year to buy no-name TVs. December is the best time to buy high-end TVs," the site says.

Black Fridays do have too-good-to-be-true deals but its not worth camping out or waking up so early just to get no-name brands.

There is already an announcement of a $279 MSRP player from Memorex.

Who thinks 45% off MSRP is a big deal?

Agreed. Really, I"ll go a step further and say it's not worth BUYING a no-name brand HDTV, whatever the price. If you can save up $500 by Balck Friday for an HDTV, then you should be able to save up a few hundred more going into the SuperBowl sales period and get a REAL HDTV by a brand you've heard of, with a respectable panel and upscaling capability, and with a warranty that may actually be worth something 11 months from now. If you get "burned" by a $500 plasma or 1080p LCD that dies on you within a year of purchase, and that company has changed their name to avoid actually fulfilling their warranty requirements, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Completely depends on the product. If its 45% off a Blu-ray player that actually works as advertised and is supported with firmware updates by its manufacturer, then great. If its 45% off a player that never gets an update and won't properly play a disc released after the player, then its a rip-off at any price. I'm not at all trying to imply anything about the upcoming Memorex player... but people do need to be cautious with all the players released this Q4 (and there will be MANY... some not yet announced) that aren't by major CE manufacturers with a proven track record.

It's fantastic that Blu-ray players are reaching mass market price points, but its also a little scary to see so many players coming out from manufacturers that have no (or very little) CE track record.

One last thing... since we're making predictions, here's mine for the best prices of Q4 at MAJOR retailers (including black Friday):

$149 BD player ($249 with $100 MIR)
$199 BD player (no rebate needed)
$249 major-brand BD player (no rebate needed -- or $299 + a $50 MIR to total $249 for same)

What is needed is a permanent low price for BD players and prices in the hundreds for high end players and not in the thousands as it is still the case over 2 years after launch.

Since it has already been previously announced that sub-$200 players were coming, and low-end tech manufacturers announced a while ago that they were entering the fray, and early generation players and their clones have ever-tumbling prices in the face of later generations joining the marketplace, that TOOL whose self-imposed nickname begins with an S has "predicted" the obvious based on old news.

Can't help it... every time someone mentions his name it draws my ire that this guy is listened to in any way, shape, or form. Why do people still cite him?

Anybody else notice he comes out with "predictions" right after a tidbit of news is released/leaked? Is it just my imagination... once again... runnin' away with me?

I dont forsee mail in rebates, WM doesnt use them as a sales ploy to get foot traffic, and if they are aimed at being doorbusters I dont see a rebate, they should do a movie bundle pack like CC/BB did last spring and offer that FREE with the purchase of the player. Nothing works better than free

I think we'll be looking at $199 for a major brand player come Black Friday. As you'll recall, last year we were looking at $299 sale prices from December through February (namely for the Sony S300 and Samsung BDP1200). We are already seeing sale prices of $299 in September, and I think there was an upcoming Circuit City ad that showed $269 for the Samsung 1500.
Now which player it will be is where the guessing game begins. Panasonic seems to have an awful lot of BD30's laying around for how long that player has been out. Again, this is all speculation on my part, but based on what happened last year and where the price trend is going, I wouldn't be at all surprised by $199.

I went to Best Buy to look arownd. looked at Blu-ray players I have a PS3 but I wanted one for the bedroom when I move. so I looked at Blu-ray players to see what price thay had them for not like I was going to buy one yet. haven't move yet. but I saw Insignia Blu-ray was down to $230 wow some day when they are on sale I will get one maybe at $199. but I saw a open box for $270 I asked why is it $270 when a new one is only $230 he sad he would give it to me for $175 no remote. but I sad there is no power cord or wires he sad $125 I sad SOLD!!! get it home. get wires out of my box of wires. hooked it up pluged it in. and it works graet little slow loading it's only 1.1 but ones the disc loads only takes 15-20 sec. it's as fast as my PS3. I have a philips universal remote tryed Insignia no luck. but remembered that magnavox made Insignia Blu-ray players tryed that and it works all factions. so for $125 and a little work I have a new well open box working Blu-ray player.
