There is a report over at highdefdigest.com that HDDVD sold approximately 750,000 HDDVD players. Have there been any reports on how many Blu-ray players (standalone and PS3) were sold during Black Friday?

Yeah sounds like DUD FUD to to me. That would have been major news if it happened. I would be willing to be the PS3 sold at least 3 times what DUD did. Especially if you look at volumes over the last few weeks PS3 is rising fast and the DUD crowd had what a fire sale early this year... I would be really shocked if Toshiba hits it units sold target for this fiscal year. PS3 on the other hand still has a better than average chance.

Even if it is a total to date, I thought their previous total to date was only around 400k, so they would have recently almost doubled the total number of HD DVD players sold. If true, this would be a huge increase in player ownership. I see a question about this has been asked in the insiders thread, hopefully we will get some interesting further info / correction.

During the weekend I did see ALLOT of people buying HD-DUD players with movies.
BUT I also saw lots of 40gb PS3's moving as well. The aisle stacks at 2 different Best Buys were down to 1/3 by Sunday. Although the large majority seemed to be buying it for kids/games. |

The HD DVD people do have a fair point in that if you buy an xbox add on HD DVD drive, you are buying it specifically to play HD DVDs, and it is not unreasonable to therefore combine those figures with standalones as "dedicated players".
The same is not true of people buying a PS3, so it is hard to come up with a comparable figure for Blu-ray player ownership, but the "20%" rule of thumb is not a bad one, and by that measure, as hollywoodinhighdef said, there are effectively far more dedicated Blu-ray players than HD DVD players out there. |

Let’s get the fact’s down.
At the beginning of this month stand alone HD DVD sales were at about 420,000, does not include Xbox add on. Toshiba are hoping to achieve 500,000 by end of this month. How many Xbox add on sold to date, let’s say 190,000 ( based on 150,000 units to June). Total sales 610,000 units. So..........wow they have managed to sell another 140,000 odd ( and that's being generous probably) stand alone and Xbox add on in the last month, including the supposedly 90,000 fire sale. Please don’t make me laugh, can’t give the bloody things away ![]() Now someone please tell me how many PS3’s only have been sold in the last month ![]() |

What is really encouraging is that people are buying HDTV's.
If you were anywhere near BB last weekend you know what I mean. Although the large majority of homes are not using their PS3's as a Blu Player YET. It is there ready and waiting to be used as one, if/when they buy the TV or when they learn about the benefits of buying into HDM. After this holiday season I would say 25-30% rate would be more realistic. |

I was at the Best Buy in Times Square and I saw 12 people buy a 40GB PS3, 2 people buy a 80GB PS3 and only 1 person buying an HD-DVD player (A3).
P.S. (I also saw like 25 people buying a Wii) At the Circuit city near Times Square I saw another 15 people buying 40GB PS3s, no 80GB sales, no HD-DVD sales but stilll like over 20 Wii sales. (Keep in mind this was during the time I was there) |

Unfortunately neither side is above "the spin." In the article in Home Media about gaming taking off (rising 73% over last year on page 8) there's a line that says Sony has backed off their claim that 100,000 PS3s sold in a week following the price cuts. Rather (according to the article), Sony now claims 100,000 PS3s, PS2s, and PSPs combined sold in a week. However, Sony says sales of the PS3 has risen 192% since the price cut. Both sides are a bit too much like politicians.

They retracted their retraction?
However, this sounds encouraging: Sales of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 video-game console more than tripled last week as price cuts drew consumers to stores after the Thanksgiving holiday. [Bloomberg's] Does that mean tripled over the 100,000 per week? Last edited by bluperch; 11-27-2007 at 12:31 PM. |
