Question Will 4K Blu-rays play on 1080p screens? (Please read post)

I don't mean will it play in 4K on a 1080p screen, I know it won't. But I mean like, maybe just playing downscaled or something--I'm asking because I can't yet afford a 4K TV (gonna be a while before I can even afford one of those upcoming 4K players). So, just curious as to whether they'd be compatible (not whether it's worth it to watch 4K content in 1080p, I intend to get a 4K TV eventually but I mean like for until then).

All the Ultra HD Blu-ray players will play downscale to 1080p.

Yes it will downscale BUT..... The player will have to convert HDR to SDR and we don't know how good that will turn out...

Considering all discs announced so far have HDR, I wouldn't bother with a SDR screen...

I was just thinking about this yesterday. This is nice to know it will downscale. Even downscaled wouldn't you benefit from the expanded color gamut even if you are missing out on full 4k resolution. This alone would make it worth it to me until 4k projector prices come down out of the stratosphere.

If the display you are playing on is limited to 8-bit Rec709 then no, you won't benefit.

I see it as a moot point because it seems every UHD disc comes with a traditional blu-ray anyway.

It has the bluray but some want to at least get some improvement from the 4K source being downscailed.

If the display has 10 bit processing will it support it?

So what about people who have 4K TV without HDR like me? Will these discs play fine?

I'm pretty sure there will be older movies released with a new 4k master on UHD Blu-ray. If the Blu-ray used an older master studios will probably include the Blu-ray with the old master and not make a new Blu-ray from the 4k master. In this case the UHD BD downscaled to 1080p will look much better.

Yeah, something like that. This is good news in that any UHD exclusive master will still be playable on a 1080p television while I wait to upgrade my TV.

I read on avsforum that everything in the chain has to be HDCP 2.2 compatible and that you need something like the HDFury Integral to play them. Now I am not sure what to believe.

Why would they think that? Link?

It says right here everything will be downconverted-

No, HDCP 2.2 is required only for video, that's why these players have 2 HDMI out ports: one for video/audio (HDMI 2.2) and one for audio (HDMI 1.4)

I still need video though. Will the second HDMI 1.4 port output 1080p video along with the audio?
My goal is to play a UHD disc on my 1080p projector in order to get access to the sound track on the UHD disc.

Oh, i see what you mean now: that's a good question, I think 1080p output should not require HDCP 2.2 at all otherwise the format wouldn't be backwards compatible at all...

And what about UHD 4:2:0 to true FHD 10-bit 4:4:4? And what about Rec. 2020 to xvYCC gamut mapping? Will anybody (Sony/Panasonic/Oppo) support that?

Hopefully it will be that simple but if it isn't people will still have the 1080p regular bluray to use.

Panasonic's player does 4:2:0 to 4:4:4

4K High-Precision Chroma Processor

The UB900 incorporates a newly developed 4K-ready engine, called the 4K High-Precision Chroma Processor. By using an original high-accuracy multi-tap process to interpolate the decoded 4K (4:2:0) signals of Ultra HD Blu-ray content to 4K (4:4:4), it delivers beautiful, natural pictures with lifelike depth and vivid colors. The UB900 also has an original 4K Direct Chroma Up-scaling function so that it can deliver 4K-quality pictures with high resolution and beautiful colours from 2K content.

* A 4K/60p/4:4:4-compatible TV must be connected with an 18-Gbps-compatible high-speed cable. When reproducing Ultra HD Blu-ray content, 4:4:4/36-bit data is output for 4K/24p, and 4:2:2/36-bit data is output for 4K/60p.
