Default How long do you think until?

How long do you think it will be until there is a retail release of a movie in Blu-ray only?

way too many factors for anybody to truly know.

Toshiba, The Economy, Piracy, Cheap Chinese Manufacturers, Playstation, everything plays a big roll in this and it can all change.

id say the earliest we could possibly see a fairly large studio release blu-only is 2013.

I'm just wondering if there might ever be a director that would only want their movie presented in a certain res/format. Like the movies coming in the next few eyars that are being shot in 3D.

Toshiba will fight fight fight for DVD to stay alive. It is their baby, their format, and their LAST HOPE at staying alive in the home video market.
Well, as long as they continue to ignore Blu-ray and pretend it is failing.
It will take a long time for DVDs to decline to a point where movies will cease to come out in the format.
Look at VHS. Now there was a drastic change in quality between DVD and VHS, which helped sell DVDs. Now not as many people see the change b/t DVD and BD (I think it is there but I am no j6p), but surprisingly it is still growing fast, faster than DVD did. VHS was the format for home video in its day, just like DVD is now. When movies stopped coming out to VHS, it was probably 6+ years after DVDs made their mark. As long as there is profit to be made in a format, they will still make it. DVDs are more popular than VHS, and CAN SILL PLAY on BD players, which means they might last longer against BD than VHS did against DVD.
So it could be 5-10 years before you see Blu-ray movies with no DVD copy. Granted, DVD's decline will show probably by 2012, and Blu-ray will start to outsell DVD then, but they will still make DVDs since they are still profitable.

No way to tell for sure right now, since the increase in BD was greater than expected. But after this holiday season, we should have a better idea of what the future holds, and how quickly.

DVD will most likely co-exist with Blu-ray for many years to come. Since blu-ray requires that you have a hi-def set, the only way a "blu-only" release is possible is if EVERYONE has an HDTV or monitor.

I don't see that happening soon, and DVD will remain an SD alternative. That said, I would expect blu-ray sales to start overtaking DVD sales in another 6 years or so, once HD penetration is higher.

Whenever Blu-ray players = DVD players prices
Whenever Blu-ray Movies = DVD movie prices..... why would anyone buy a DVD when you can have a blu-ray for the same price? so to answer your question
NEVER...... DVD's will never die as they are targeted for the majority of classes ( the rich, the median, the poor)

A long time. Not everyone is rich enough to get a BD player and pay $25.99-$34.99 per movie.

At some point in the next three years a studio will issue a movie on Blu-ray significantly before the dvd release. At first it will mostly be a marketing gimmick to draw more attention to a title the studio thinks needs the help. We probably won't see the major studios abandon dvd releases completely though for a period of 5 to 7 years. I do see some smaller studios probably dropping dvd early.

Very long time for sure. DVDs will last much longer than VHS did. BD and DVD will co-exist for a long time.

It is not that people are not rich enough. Most people could afford a Blu ray now. Almost all tvs sold now are hd albeit in 720.
People are just cheap. When offered a choice most will pick the cheapest, same as if they are offered a upgrade, most decline.
Prices are getting to be more affordable now and with christmas coming will be more affordable still.
How many people run around with 300.00 + cell phones that say they can't afford a Blu ray player.

People are cheapskates.
