Default Has anyone watched Hustle & Flow yet?

I like this movie, and I'm about to order it.

But I've seen some negative comments on the PQ. I don't know if this is pure "grain-hating" (since it's on 16 mm it should be grainy) or if the complaints have some real substance..?

So has anyone seen it yet?

Well, to answer my own question:
I just read Davids review here: http://www.hometheaterspot.com/fusio...hp?tid/137661/

It seems like it delivers what it should - a gritty and "ugly" picture, which is "faithful" to the source.

Good enough for me!

Just watched this film and I must say, "It has the worst PQ of any blu-ray movie I own." The movie is grainy through-out the entire film and at times looks a little blurry. I regret buying this blu-ray, as the standard DVD looks alot better.

I couldn't disagree more. The DVD can't hold a candle to the BD or HD DVD. Is it grainy? Hell yeah..is is pretty? Nope. Is it faithful to the source? YES. This is an intentionally grainy movie and if you are looking for clarity like Deja Vu, you aren't going to find it here. This was shot on 16mm, which shows heavy film grain. The only way to get rid of it would be to filter it out with noise reduction and a high pass filter, but what you would be left with would be a soft picture with no fine detail.

The compressionists should be commended in this release for making it look quite good considering what they had to work with.

I watched this earlier tonight and I couldn't agree more with David's assessment.

Same here. When I played this title, I couldn't believe some reviewers gave it 2 or 2 1/2 stars. I wanted to "whoup that trick".

I have to compliment David/Chad for their reviews.
You are both very consistant in judging the transfers of the films on their own merits - which strangely enough seems very rare today.

You don't expect every film to look like "Crank" and you don't deduct stars/paws because you don't like the look/photography/color palette of a film.

Strange enough - I feel like "we" have taken a step back from the DVD-era, where reviewers/people were often commenting the transfer quality. Now stars are deducted because of film grain, style of photography and color palette.
Weird.

I think you have chosen the right path in mentioning the look/grainyness in the reviews - but without taking away stars/paws for it.

So - props to you (and other reviewers who have stayed clear-sighted) for the good work. It's very appreciated!

Thanks for the kind words. There are some who are expecting that perfect "look" from both HD formats, but HD will show you everything, warts and all!

Do the detractors of the Blu-ray quality understand that this film was shot on 16mm film stock? Yes, of course it is grainy....

This was the only thread I could find for this, but a random page for this showed up at Bullmoose. Often from my ability to read their site, that means a new release of some kind is coming out. The film doesn't have an anniversary for another couple years, so I do wonder if Paramount are giving it the 4K treatment. It could also be a sign of a boutique label releasing it. I could see Shout Factory doing a release under the Shout Select line for instance.

Looks like i was right, a new Hustle and Flow release is coming. Not sure what it is though. Doesn't state 4K right now. Perhaps a Steelbook?
