Hey all

I have a problem. I think my new Onkyo TX-SR576 is going to go pop!
It gets quite hot and only has an inch of space above where it sits.

Do Onkyo receivers cut out if they overheat as a safety measure ?

How much clearance is needed above the receiver ?

If I have some cooling at the back of the cabinet will this be enough to keep it cool ?

Any help and recommendations would be very appreciated. Thanks

WOAH!

you have, essentially, no ventilation room for your receiver.

I don't know what Onkyo specs are for htat receiver - but the owners manual should say how much breathing room it needs. I'd say at LEAST 6" on top, plus room on the sides - and exhaust port in the back of that cabinet.

You've got to give that thing some space!!!!

Edit: It's a wonder you haven't burned it up yet. If you had something with more power you very well could have.

So realistically I should just put it on top of the cabinet ?

If I put some big fans on the back of the cabinet pulling air through would this help at all ?

I doubt putting fans in the back, with your current setup, would do much for you. There is essentially no breathing room right now.

It may not look as nice with it on top of your cabinet, but your receiver will thank you.

They have some excellent, and very quiet cooling fans.
Ger the one that is "on" all the time, and plug ir into the "switched" 115 v outlet on the back of your receiver.

I am installing their double unit with variable-speed fans in my new system.

Doubt that receiver even has an outlet on the back. There are other solutions, such as a power strip that kicks on power to a set outlet when power is turned on to another outlet.

Basically, you need more room than that. You're potentially going to be lowering the life of your components. I think 6 inches is a little excessive but it needs more than that. Fit your hand in there after running a movie and it's going to be hot.

Onkyos by nature run hot, so you want to give them some room. On top of your stuff might be best with your current setup.

Good idea - but notice that he has less than an inch of room between the top of his receiver and the wood of his cabinet.

your onkyo might be able to display the temp. on the reciever, try holding the display button and press the stand by button a few times then letting go of everything and quickly press the tone button. it works on my 605 so maybe it'll work on yours.

So what temperature is considered too hot and what would be optimum?

Heh, that's the question. Onkyo's run a lot hotter than other electronics. Have to check the manual but I remember reading somewhere that it's 80* above room temp. (IE hot as hell).

i have also heard this. some onkyo's also have fans that only switch on when i certain temp is reached.

Thanks for everyone's comments

There is no vents at the rear of the receiver so yeah all air flow needs to be at the top.
My mate on the weekend said he has his completely enclosed as well and said he has had no problems since he got it (2 years). I'm a little more concerned, hence my post.

aramis109 you make a good point, as it will lower the life of the components. I'm not seeing any problems now (or my friend) but down the track there could/will be.

plowmanjoe Yeah couldn't find any temp thing with my quick attempt this morning.

I bought the cabinet for it's looks and didn't even think of cooling for the receiver later on

. The GF isn't going to like it but looks like it's going on top.
Now I will have a big gapping hole on the right hand side *ponders what to fill it with*

Having it on top means I will need to put one of my speakers on the sub which is situated on the left. If that sounds terrible I'll make some stands to mount them on.

If I got two of these and then some fans mounted at the back of the cabinet do you think there would be enough airflow to have it in this space ?

The silver set top box (from OP pic) has been given away so it would be the only device in this section of the cabinet.
