Default Cooling Fans for AV Equipment

Does anyone have any tips on keeping their av center and receiver cool.
I have the Onkyo 705 and my av center heats up quite a bit.
I cant seem to find any small fans that would fit in there.

any suggestions on products available for this?

I've never used cabinets that are enclosed. They can be nice looking in the front but have open sides and backs as well as cable management.

This is a decent shot of what I mean. Check the other views for cable management. It's even pretty enough for the female (or potential) to not consider it an eye-sore.

AV stuff in a cabinet?

This tower looks really nice and will keep your components from cooking each other.

Are you actually having any problems with your equipment? Many enclosed cabinets have removable shelves. In my cabinet they are screwed in, but I can move/remove them. Does it have 2 areas to store devices? If so, clear out one side and take out the shelf. That ought to give you plenty of room. I keep the doors open on mine when watching tv and movies.

Think any of those will help?

wire 4 pc fans onto a dc power plug, put 2 blowing in, and two blowing out, mount to back

for fun you can get LED ones, that glow blu! GO BLU!

its all about circulation, and make sure nothing is stacked on top of eachother.

If you have to go with fans, use the biggest you can find and run them slow. More CFM at slower speeds = less noise from the motor and cavitation.

There are many companies that sell A/V cooling fans and other devices. Check the following links. You also do a Google or Yahoo search.

I have this exact setup, closed cabinet with both a Onkyo TX-SR705 and a playstation 3 (folding 24/7!) with 4 80mm computer case fans installed on the back to an adjustable DC adapter from radioshack. With the PS3 running full time and the receiver on quite a bit each day its rarely gets too hot. The receiver constantly runs at 123/125F which is just about the same if I run it with the front glass door open. The PS3 never goes to full speed fan and the cabinet overall stays relatively quiet.

If you want some pictures I can take some. I originally did this because the cabinet does not give the receiver much room to breath and the only way I would put it in there was to get some reliable cooling and circulation going on.

I dunno how close you are to your cabinet, but you might want to consider swapping those out for a decent 120mm fans. They're quieter and less irritating than 80mm fans and push more air.

I was amazed at the difference when I finally got a computer tower that could fit 120mm fans. (It has 5 in it and I can hardly hear them on high with the tower sitting under my desk.)

Default Using fan to cool receiver or not. Need advice.

I have a Pioneer Elite VSX94thx and I usually run it pretty hard. Now it isn't super hot but does get pretty warm. It is located in a pretty open enviroment, but i'm a big believer in cooler components longer lifespan. So I've been thinking of purchasing a fan to add on top. Is this a waste of money and time? All receivers run warm and even somewhat hot when ran at loud volumes for some time and are typically not built with fans in them. Is there a chance i could harm the reciever? Please any advice would be great. i've included a pic for reference that there is plenty of air space, i think.

Here's a link to the fan i'm thinking of getting. http://coolerguys.com/840556069126.html Either placing this in the center or rear right where there seems more heat.

I don't see how it could be harmful....as long as you don't interfere with the receiver's natural pattern of ventilation.

I would be more worried about your power conditioner overheating with stuff stack on top of it.

I don't think that his model has vents on the top of the unit. But either way you're right...probably not a great idea to stack things on top of it.

yes no vents on top of conditioner. i've done the touch/feel test on that side and there is no real heat coming out of that sucker, with the exception of the PS3 when turned on. Maybe i'll get some spacer's between the BD player and conditioner.

Adding a fan won't hurt. Your receiver is out in the open so I don't know if I would worry about it. If it were in a cabinet it might be a different story.

Adding a fan may also contribute to noise depending on the particular fan.

You could also add a small fan, and place it further away.... it doesn't have to blow directly on it....

I saw this in the Fry's add this morning, at first I thought it was a laptop cooler but actually it is an Audio/Video cooler. I think I will go and check it out today and see how useful it could be. It is the Antec AV Cooler

I do use a fan on my Onkyo 805 since it is installed in my entertainment center. I do have nearly 2 ft of open space above the rcvr with a vent cut in the rear of the center.

I use a small fan in my media closet. It has a glass door but the top is open, so I have it blowing the warm air out of that area. Got the fan from Walmart for like 8 bucks and it's fairly quiet.

I wouldn't bother with a fan. Judging by your picture, there's more than enough ventilation around your receiver.

I am following up to my post from yesterday. I went to Fry's and picked up the Antec A/V cooler for $69.99 ($29.99 after $40 mail in rebate). The unit works very well and is extremely quite. Instead of the fan blowing down on the unit like before, the Antec uses two blower fans to pull the heat off the top and exhaust to the rear. The unit is made of glass filled nylon with an aluminum plate ontop. It is designed to allow you to stack your other components on top of the receiver without them getting hot. For now I will not stack anything atop the 805 and just use it to exhaust the heat. I will include pics (I'm at work). Here is the website with specs:

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=75007

this is the site for the rebate, but the sale ends today.
