I enjoyed this theatrically, but I also feel like I have zero reason to ever see it again. It's an important story to tell, but it's thoroughly unremarkable as a film.

They jumped the gun on that artwork, should've waited to at least put Nominated for Best Picture on there.

I like how they ran the teal/orange filter on everyone for the cover. Oh well, at least the movie will still look fine.

Caught this along with Creed today. For one thing I must say that while there are no readily apparent directorial flourishes here, I thought Tom McCarthy showed excellent restraint in letting the story tell itself. The same can be said of the cast who all showed real passion in their performances without ever being too showy. The attention to detail is fantastic, from the clothes that are worn by the journalists to the cars that are on the road, which all fit the time frame of which this film is focused. Since this film is set in a year that's relatively close to our own, you expect to spot like a 2014 model car or something riding around, but I personally didn't catch one. Then there's the subject matter itself that while deeply unsettling, is never shoved in your face through gratuitous imagery. It all takes place through conversations of the past, and that's all the viewer needs to understand the gravity of the situation. We see the toll it has taken on the victims and the Boston community without ever having to witness a molestation scene. And in that aspect, the Boston community becomes an integral character to the film all on its own. While not my personal favorite of the year, I consider Spotlight to be one of 2015's best.

Bummer there's no commentary.

People understand the director directs the actors' performances, right? That's part of directing. You can say maybe they'd have done it just as well, but it would be a completely different movie if someone else had directed.

That's a big reason why I still think this movie has a good shot at the Best Director Oscar. Most of the Academy is made up of actors, and they like honoring directors that can get good performances out of them. Remember when Tom Hooper beat David Fincher? Social Network should've been the clear winner, but King's Speech had three acting nominations, one of which won -- Social Network only had one nomination. Not saying that's THE reason Hooper won, but I'm sure it was a big one.

Not sure if I should go watch this in the theatre next weekend or just wait until the blu-ray (the blu-ray apparently comes out Feb 1st in Canada).

I personally think it would play better on a smaller screen.

It's a fantastic movie (definitely watch it), but it's not required viewing in a theater IMO.

I loved the movie...in my top 10 for 2015....

That said, I won't be buying it on day one...it's subject matter means I won't watch it that often, so I will wait for this to drop in price.

It's so nice to see brave and important movies being released recently. I am happy that both Spotlight and The Big Short were not only made but given Best Pic noms.

Spotlight is the most impactful and important film since 12 Years a Slave IMO, and I hope it takes wins Best Picture.

From what I've read, I think that's pretty unlikely, particularly if it nabs Best Actor. Birdman wasn't too long ago; also, the Academy doesn't tend to give the big dog to film-as-endurance-test candidates -- unless we're talking about running times.

Spotlight is a more probable choice, though I still haven't seen either one. While I wasn't mad about The Martian, it's technically accomplished and inoffensive. Hell, I'd say even Mad Max could sneak in there -- it's conventionally entertaining, which they like, though it's clearly a genre film, which they don't like, but given the incredible critical attention it's received, perhaps that could negate the last point?

It's Big Short or Revenant for BP; Spotlight isn't gonna win.

I made a blind buy of Spotlight at Target during lunch break.

I initially passed up on this film, because it seemed like the type of "Oscar bait" that I usually avoid. I keep reading great reviews from trusted sources, though, so I'm finally biting the hook.

its a great movie but it really shouldve been released with more special features considering the subject matter
