Possibly this year's Oscar winner for BP.

I doubt it, too workmanlike. We'll probably get something with a lot more mugging like The Big Short or The Martian.

The Academy goes for these type of films. Mainly the ones that depict a true story.

Nope. BP will go to 'The Revenant'.

From what I've read, I think that's pretty unlikely, particularly if it nabs Best Actor. Birdman wasn't too long ago; also, the Academy doesn't tend to give the big dog to film-as-endurance-test candidates -- unless we're talking about running times.

Spotlight is a more probable choice, though I still haven't seen either one. While I wasn't mad about The Martian, it's technically accomplished and inoffensive. Hell, I'd say even Mad Max could sneak in there -- it's conventionally entertaining, which they like, though it's clearly a genre film, which they don't like, but given the incredible critical attention it's received, perhaps that could negate the last point?

It's Big Short or Revenant for BP; Spotlight isn't gonna win.

I made a blind buy of Spotlight at Target during lunch break.

I initially passed up on this film, because it seemed like the type of "Oscar bait" that I usually avoid. I keep reading great reviews from trusted sources, though, so I'm finally biting the hook.

NPR did a great special on the story this past weekend. I feel like stuff like that would be very easy to compile onto the disc. Very disappointing.

Still a great movie. Having paid to see it in theaters means I'll (anxiously) wait for the price drop.
