Default 31 Days of Halloween Movies - Horror Fans Unite!

I'm starting this thread b/c I've decided to page through my horror collection and watch at least 31 horror movies by Halloween. I hope to watch one per day, but we'll see how it goes.

So, every time you watch one, post the name of the movie, rating and your thoughts on it. This should get everyone into the Halloween spirit and give us movie buffs ideas on movies we may not have seen. Please keep your thoughts generic and if you post spoilers, use the spoiler tags.

October 1st - Street Trash (1986)

The liquor is not cheap, until the Viper is put out on sale. This lethal liquor disposes of many a bum and chaos ensues in the local junk yard. The local everyday bums are terrorized by the Vietnam vet bum and there's plenty of gore and nude women (if you like that sort of thing) in this movie. Even the main mobster guy in this movie, was in Goodfellas (restaurant owner who Tommy owed money too). If you think you can normally predict movies, this is one you surely will not. There are parts that were just funny and disgusting all at once. One particular scene is when the cop beats on the mobster thug in the bathroom, those who have seen it, know exactly what I'm talking about...This movie is more of a gore / funny movie from the 80's, not so scary. But still work a look for those looking to relive some 80's memories and get some laughs along the way.

3/5 - a solid effort, fun and gross at the same time, the 2 disc DVD offers the best I've ever seen this movie, played in the ps3, this version upscales nicely.

Update!

Running Tab - I'll post the movie summary here, the reviews will be integrated in the thread. I may not make 31, but we'll see!

Oct 01 - Street Trash 3/5
Oct 02 - The Howling 4/5

Oct 12 - Curse of the Devil 1.5/5
Oct 13 - The Ruins 3.5/5
Oct 15 - The Devil's Chair 4/5
Oct 15 - Phantasm 4.5/5
Oct 16 - Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer 3/5
Oct 26 - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) 3.5/5
Oct 26 - Re-animator 5/5
Oct 27 - Jason X 4/5
Oct 27 - Freddy vs. Jason 3.5/5
Oct 28 - Jason Goes to Hell 2/5
Oct 28 - Last House on the Left 4/5
Oct 29 - Night of the Living Dead 5/5
Oct 29 - Carrie 4.5/5
Oct 30 - The Crow 5/5
Oct 30 - The Thing 5/5
Oct 30 - Bram Stoker's: Dracula 5/5

Mine was called Phone (AKA Pon) - 2002

Set in Korea, this horror flick concerns a reporter on the run from someone she wrote a story about who finds herself also being stalked by a mysterious ghost trying to send her a message.

The movie wasn't half bad and had some VERY good acting by the youngest cast member in the movie who's probably 6 years old in the movie. The things she does in this movie were amazing.

Overall, I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5. Worth the rental. It's on DVD only, but it looked nice on the PS3.

As much as I love horror movies there is no way I could attempt this. I barely get in 1 movie a week.

I love Dead Alive I make sure I watch this and at least one of the Evil Dead flicks every October. There is no way I could ever get 31 movies in a month so I usually get those two plus 4-6 various others.

I love horror movies and try to watch more during October as well. I won't have the time to watch 31 movies, but I'll make sure I'll post when I do and read everyone elses posts.

I just watched a movie on Showtime called Snake Island. It was very, very very, bad, but like most b-horror flicks was funnier than hell (one of the reasons I watch them).

The best part was:
[Show spoiler]These two chicks are drunk on start dancing with each other (topless of course), meanwhile a snake is watching on the background and starts dancing (literally) to the techno music that is playing
LMAO

Also WAR Peter Jackson and Dead Alive!

watched Halloween two nights ago:

-loved Carpenters' use of foreground: we see Mikey's left shoulder on R side of our TV (in foreground) and Jamie Lee walking away in the background...it just hits a nerve no other movie does!
-at beginning w/ Mikey jr wearing the mask, and Carpenter showing us the mask perspective...anotherh one of 1000 techniques throughout the movie where you're NOT watching it, you are IN it!

I just got my blu-ray copies of The Thing, Dawn of the Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Sixth Sense today. Of course I'll be watching those in the next week! Other movies I try to watch every October is:

- Halloween (this is a must)
- The Excorcist (this is also another must)
- Donnie Darko
- The Evil Dead series
- A 'Friday the 13th' film
- A 'Nightmare on Elm Street' film
- Nosferatu
- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
- Sleepy Hollow

I love Halloween time. I pretty much only watch horror films all month long, nothing else. Same goes for December, I watch a ton of winter holiday films, such as Home Alone, Jingle all the Way (wait, weren't these just announced .... lol ) Looks like I've got a good holiday season comin up

Oct. 1st/2nd (started last night but finished watching it today)

The Thing (blu-ray) - if that counts. Kind of sci-fi/horror. Anyway, pretty good sci-fi/horror movie from the 80s. Pretty gory and I thought the special effects looked surprisingly good. More gory than scary though.

Rating: 4.5/5 (after watching it the 2nd time, the 1st time I probably would have given it 3.5/5 -- I explain why later in the thread).

Started off last night with a double header.

#1.) DONNIE DARKO on Demand (Free!) in HD. What an amazing flick. I have yet to see the extended director's cut, but I will definitely check it out someday.

#2.) THE THING on Blu-Ray. Third time seeing this movie. I seem to watch it once every decade. It's a mean little story with awesome 80's effects, good acting, and a spectacular Wilfred Brimley without his husky stash. "Check your blood sugar!" Great picture and qudio quality to boot!

Great thread, by the way!!

I started with Pumpkinhead. I really like this horror film & you can't go wrong with a horror film in October, with the word pumpkin in the title.

October 2nd - The Howling (1981)

A fine film by Joe Dante, you may know him from films like Gremlins, Twilight Zone, and the burbs. Joe directs this classic Werewolf film that was probably an A class horror movie, but is clearly a B class in today's realm. The film starts out with a news reporter who meets someone for a story, at a pron store and ends up being violated by the werewolf. Lots of things happen in this little community as the humans vs. the werewolves battle continues. There's plenty of sexuality in this film with some good 'scenes' in it. The action is a bit campy by today's standards, but I still appreciate the era and time in which this film was made. I think it did a bang up job. The ending was a bit silly (the chic at the end looks like chewy's long lost wife).

I really dig these styles of movies due to the puppetry and special effects were all non-cgi. It really gets me in the Halloween spirit.

4/5 - a great effort and a good use of puppetry and special effects that were non-CGI. I played this on the ps3 which did a pretty good job of up converting, however the dark scenes were pretty rough looking. Overall the picture is good for DVD.

ps. Slim Pickens is in this! You may remember him from films such as Dr. Strangelove, The Black Hole, and many many more.

If you like Dead Alive, at least rent Street Trash, it's in the same vein with the campy humor and gore. I actually like Bad Taste more than Dead Alive.
