Hardware needs to come first weirdly

Is this what you are referring to?
Well, there is post #258 on the "Mad Max: Fury road UHD" thread, and yes, posts #23, 24, 38, 82, 86, 88, 90, 159 in the "Screenshot comparisons" thread that you are linking to.
It's likely there are more, but I haven't checked some threads of movies I'm not interested in.

Beware those are mostly terrible pics that don't show the beauty of UHD, nor of blu-ray, but I believe they do show that an HDR grading doesn't change the main aesthetic or style of a movie.

Let me start out by saying that I own a 4K TV and am extremely curious about UHD blu-ray. I have yet to see it in action in person, as my local Best Buy doesn't have a display set up.

I've been reading the reviews of the new UHD discs and I have to say so far nothing has me saying "shut up and take my money" yet.

And then there's this gem from the latest review of Pineapple Express that has me chuckling to myself:

"Compare a towel ... the Blu-ray fails to offer more than a fairly smeary (comparatively speaking), flat towel. On the UHD, detail is greatly improved, revealing its surface texture with much greater sharpness and very fine attention to fabric detail."

I don't know about you guys, but what I've been dreaming of is enhanced towel definition in my lazy stoner comedies.

I'm just poking a little fun. But to me it seems like there's not a lot of reason to upgrade from regular blu-ray just yet.

Should of used the 4K mastered version for a more level comparison

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=3105&d2=3106

It has more detail and better grain.

So true! With BD it was possible to be wowed with a cursory glance. Look no PAL. No NTSC. A proper, solid, film transfer.

The comments here are like "wow look over there at that tiny object that nobody previously noticed. It's now rendered with so much striking detail - but you still won't notice it!"

I really don't think that statement to be representative of the reviews published so far AT ALL, but to each his own.
This is only my take, but it sounds like some denial is going around.
When blu-ray launched I read all the time how most people couldn't see any difference with DVD. And there are plenty of blu-ray reviews that are based on singling out how there's more detail in sight. Criticizing a format because one review chooses to focus on that while ignoring the overall raves is kind of surrealist, in my humble opinion.
But like I said, this is just my take on it. I know plenty of people who never upgraded to blu-ray either. We all stop at some point. For example, I never intend to get into 8k (if I'm even alive).

Having read several reviews now I'm starting to question the point of 4K br when it appears that Hollywood is mastering virtually everything at 2K.

I just watched fury road on a non hdr set. To me, there is nothing to question. I went back through the blu ray and ithe uhd disc is far superior.

Part of the spec was to provide 1080p in HDR, which is basically what we're seeing with these intial releases, think of them as 1080p on steroids, so even on a non HDR set you are getting the benifit of the higher bit rate and on HDR sets there is an added benifit, in an ideal world everything would have been finished in 4K.

Every time I read one of your comments, I always read it as if Napoleon Dynamite himself were saying it. And your comment just put it into perspective why I/we should feel better about moving into this new format. Gave me a laugh

Spending thousands on a entirely new setup better? That's the point for some people. They do not feel that much investment is worth it for a minor upgrade when bluray is still putting out good PQ.

TV purchases are a sunk cost. Part of the natural cycle of upgrading. Those thinking of buying UHD discs and a player probably already have a 4K TV. I doubt if many are seriously considering rebuying all their equipment from scratch just to jump in early.

Then dont buy it. To me its worth it. Im not sure why this is so hard to understand. If you dont think it is, then watch blu ray. I want better. I always want better. If its 5 more dollars a disc and cost me 400 to upgrade my blu ray player. Im in.
Its worth it to me. Im not asking you to buy it for me.
What you call a minor upgrade, I call a major upgrade to my theatre experience.

Yeah exactly. So why can't someone think otherwise without being accused of something? This is a open forum for discussions is it not?

I was speaking in general. I'm not saying i specifically think that about UHD.
