Dear Blu-ray experts,

I'm looking for a pardner to place my blu-ray/DVD supplements worldwide regarding films by Sam Peckinpah. I just finished bonus material for the upcoming french KILLER ELITE blu-ray / DVD special edition, but I had learned about that project mainly by sheer luck just four weeks before the deadline. I'm not really following or investigating upcoming Peckinpah releases, being tied up in all sorts of different projects not related to homevideo.

Hence I need someone (or more than one person) who is good at finding out very early about upcoming Peckinpah releases so we could offer possible new or already produced documentaries & featurettes etc. to the involved companies around the globe. I already missed the STRAW DOGS blu-rays, I could have done some nice additional supplements. Just think about the CROSS OF IRON blu-ray, it easily could have become a release without any supplements at all, if someone attached to the label here in Germany would not have rembered an old e-mail of mine.

There must be some persons around who are good at being 'up to date'. In any case, to discuss this matter any further, just forward me a message!

Mike

Straw Dogs is one of the most powerful movies of the '70's, and IMHO it's also Peckinpah's best film; and, I would also argue that it's Hoffman's best film as well. Great story & acting by everyone, and the climactic scene is pure cinematic brilliance. It's interesting that a film featuring such unlikeable characters (including the two leads) can be such a compelling watch. The "fish out of water" sequence was very pronounced, i.e. an American moving to England & being extremely out of place...the scene when Hoffman walked into the pub near the beginning & everyone stopped talking was quite disconcerting. The obvious antagonism the town natives felt towards him was almost palatable...

IMHO, Hoffman's best work was in the '70's - along with SD, other great films included: Marathon Man, Straight Time, Lenny, Little Big Man, & Papillon....

There are no news about a possible re-release of this, with some extra features from the otherwise terrible UK release and/or the old Criterion DVD?

And preferably with the original audio track.

To be honest, I'd rather buy the criterion.

The original Criterion release was under a temporary license from MGM and was only in print for a brief period. It is a beautiful edition and still one of my favorite Criterions. That being said, the blu-ray is a MASSIVE upgrade in picture quality. I still own the Criterion because of the features and its OOP status, but if you're wanting it for the movie, go with the blu-ray. Also, much cheaper than the Criterion now.

Yep, I rented the BD from Blockbuster when they were still around, and I agree the audiovisual presentation of the movie is quite good as it is.

But I would like having the best of both worlds, so to say; it's pretty frustrating that Fremantle's egregious grindhouse-like transfer in the UK is at least accompanied with a nice handful of bonus features (some even shared with the old Criterion DVD release) while MGM's effort has nothing to offer but a few trailers.

And as conservative as the 5.1 mix on the US release is, original audio is always a bonus in my book.

It's possible that the U.K. distributor lost the rights to the film. However, there's still plenty of copies in the U.S.

I dig Sam Pechinpah.

But I don't dig no rape scenes.

...and I've always heard the one in Straw Dogs is pretty bad.

There's no indication on Amazon that the film is going out of print.

http://www.amazon.com/Straw-Dogs-Unr...7642162&sr=1-2
it's been removed from at least 4 or 5 other US sites though
best buy still has it listed but on back order
just seems strange that it's been removed from other sites

try find somewhere other than Amazon that has it listed
