PS3 HDD Question - Blu-ray Forum

A guy I work with has a PS3 that crapped out on him and he wants to get a new one to replace it since the warranty has expired. He wants to keep his game saves but hasn't backed up his old HDD. Can he just swap out the old drive to the new system and be good to go?

I imagine it would work fine, If the HDD isnt the actual problem that is......

No, this wont work. I believe that once you swap, it will have to reformat the disk drive and you will lose your info...

Yes, it formats the HDD every time you install a new one, so your friend might be in trouble.

Some games track your stats online (Warhawk) and at least those will be good - but not many do that.

Also, if he's going to try to do a Sony repair/replacement, he would need to send the HDD with the PS3 anyway.
