Default plasma question

please no lcd vs plasma stuff lol

my friend just got a plasma and i am very uneducated when it comes to these, anyways its a lg and an older model that was bought refurbished.
he got it yesterday and when i hooked up my bluray player (panny bd-30) i noticed the players screen was exhibiting for lack of a better term "flashing". looked like the blue right in the middle and both upper corners would light up faintly and quite regularly. then when i put in a dvd (not a blu lol) i have it set to have grey bars for standard aspect ratio it gave an effect in the top corners i can only describe as looking similar to fish scales, with that kind of holograpic rainbow effect you would see on an oily silver fish. so is his set screwed or does it just need to be warmed up or something, the grey was definitly not solid grey and to by honest the black wasn't all that black which surprised me coming from a plasma.

its an LG 50pc1dr i think was the model number if i remember correctly. he got it very very cheap but would like to know if he should swap out now.
