Default SONY delays Blu-Ray Player to October !!!

Well, forum members, it's official . . . SONY sent emails to all its dealers (which I am one) notifying us that the introduction of the Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S1 has been delayed until mid to late October 2006. It was a one sentence email, not containing any reasoning for this delay. Now I sit with pre-orders from customers 'expecting' product fulfillment in August. I guess I'll have to put on my PR cap and do my rug dance to all these customers now or substitute and switch them to the Samsung unit for August fulfillment. Way to go SONY !!!!!

However, all is not lost. It certainly appears that this delay may have some positive aspects to it, correcting and improving the Player, making sure it is pristine at its launch. If this is so, then the delay is justified and we the consumer (and reseller) will benefit. One thing is critical to its successful launch and that is 'not to miss' the Holiday Season, and the excited buyer at that time. If they happen to postpone to the first quarter 2007, we will not see any price reduction occur until the late summer or fall, following SONY recovering their R&D monies, which will always occur first. As I get intelligence information from SONY, I'll pass it on here to my fellow forum members, provided it is not confidential information, not for the general public.

Good.

You shouldn't have any problems with reasonable customers. Naturally, you'll probably have a few ass clowns that'll give you grief. Some people just aren't rational or fair. You'll just have to deal with them or get rid of them, I guess.

I thought this was already confirmed news, but thanks for this confirmation in any event.

This is a good delay. Get the products on the same page, get these discs fixed, and have a solidified launch come October. Get these beta test like bumps that have happened now fixed up and have a "real" launc in October.

If they do launch this stuff in October and that above criteria has not been met (in other words, the delay was not used to full benefits...) then to quote the immortal Keith Jackson: "Whooooooooah Nelly!"

That is unfortunate. However I this this damn near guarantees Sony's product hits the ground running.

Hopefully by Oct we'll have some SL discs that use VC-1 or AVC.

Default good for the delay

Good I got rid of my order for the Samsung, hopefully by the time Sony comes out they will have the movies on dual-layer and the hdmi upgrades sorted out and implemented.

I really hope that this means HDMI 1.3 will be in the player.

Honestly, there will be no excuses if there isn't.

At that rate, I still believe the HD audio codecs should also be included in this player, the Panny player, and especially the Elite player. That's what > $1000 a pop should get you.

At the very least, firmware upgradeable all the way.

Beyond that, of course, I have to agree with this statement 100 percent:

Again, they had damned well better be.

It doesn't matter how awesome the hardware and the players are, or how awesome the specs on paper are...they have to USE it.

Make it happen.

I am convinced Sony is not playing around right now...

with the PS3 for instance...they have some cushion, because the 360 is and has been glitchy...and it offers no competition....

the HD-DVD player has come out swinging, even as an underdog....it's forcing Sony not to half-ass this competition like they wanted to and as they likely expected Toshiba to do as well....

this will make for a better format war and may cause it to end quicker because they won't milk the consumer as much as they planned to by putting out an ill-prepared product...

Apparently Sony has already stated that they are too far along with the development of the player to include 1.3, it requires a different chip set unlike previous HDMI upgrades that can be done via HDMI. They are using the extra time to work on the players software apparently.

The demo unit at SOny STyle IMO blew everything i have seen "HD-Wise" out of the water. But then i guess demo footage is intended to do that.

70" QUALIA + BDPs1 = 4tW!!!

^^ If they improve the quality of the discs, definitely.

I'll bet that demo is something to behold on a setup like that!

Yeah prerecorded demos will do that. I'd hope that they'd put in a movie so that you could really get an idea what it would look like.
