I've been receiving many enquiries about our planned release of "It Came From Outer Space" on 3D Blu-ray.

Earlier this year Universal Studios telephoned me to say that they had decided to do a US release of the film and suggested we might collaborate on production with our UK release.

I have now decided that there is little point in having two competing releases and have with great reluctance cancelled Panamint Cinema's release.

I apologise for the disappointment this will cause to the many of you who have supported Panamint's very successful release of "Inferno".

I can understand Panamint Cinema dropping out, it must be tough enough making money with catalogue releases without going up against a big studio. I hope they continue with other projects, meanwhile, if I have to import this to the UK, no big deal, Universal price their Blu's very reasonably & hardly ever region lock them.

When was the last time Universal released a classic film in 3D? Is it likely they'll bother here? I know that they did Creature from the Black Lagoon, but that was a long time ago.

They just did Jaws 3, so...

I know, three decades newer and not quite a "classic", but still.

Wow, I forgot all about that. Yeah, if they'd release a crapper like that for only 10 bucks in 3D, I'm sure they will do it with this.

To be fair, these are the 3D titles Universal believes will sell, so that's why.

As much as it must have hurt Panamint to drop the title, I have to give Universal some credit for making that call to Panamint, too. That was obviously not something that they needed to do, and numerous companies would not have bothered. Even if they didn't give any thought to Panamint's side, the fact remains that at least Panamint were able to drop the title, which hopefully saved Panamint some cash for other projects.

Also, assuming that Universal are indeed releasing this one themselves, that is really only good news for a film like this, because Universal at least has the ability to broaden its success, by pricing it aggressively, and getting it into stores.

This is great news, and hopefully this means that Universal will also be releasing some of their other 50's sci-fi flicks at the same time. I can't see them just releasing ICFOS all alone.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm hoping they bring Bob Furmanek into the fold to help oversee the release. If Universal just dumps this out as a bare-bones 2-D disc, it will be a real missed opportunity.

I hope so, I'd especially like to see them release This Island Earth, Tarantula and The Incredible Shrinking Man. Maybe a box set similar to Warner's Special Effects Collection?

well Madame X was just released by Panamint and they will not send it to the US--on amazon.uk--so I'm assuming some other company in the US that is planning a release must have contacted them.
but if they locked it to region b, why couldn't they send it to the US?
they are the only seller, so there's no way to get Madame X at the moment.
(it's the version with Lana Turner)

well two of these have already been released by Koch media in Germany--through their agreement with Universal--so I wouldn't think it would be too hard for Universal to release them in the US because they are already done.

They could add US editions of The Mole People, The Land Unknown and Monolith Monsters as well, but I won't be holding my breath.

I really hope this comes out soon. I am one of the few who prefer this to the remake. Only by a very small margin, but still. Exciting news.

Also, did anyone mistakingly read Russell Cowe's name (at the bottom of the letter) as Russell Crowe's?

Ya, I read what he said too fast. Most people love the original, so the remake he alludes to most people liking more would definitely not be that wretched tv-movie.

Furmanek made a lot of noise on HTF at the beginning of the year about being involved with the creation of a 3d master for the film which at the time did not exist.
Unfortunately despite being an industry insider he didn't post any updates over there.
The Panamint statement about cancelling the UK release because there will be a US one sounds unconvincing.
