Default Watchmen ending Poll (SpOILERS!)

So who here thinks they should of stuck with the squid ending?

I for one am a bit disappointed they didn't keep the squid. A lot of people who are happy it's not in the movie state that it's too unrealistic and such. Well...duh....that was the whole point and also if you wanted it to be realistic Dr Manhattan shouldn't even be in the movie then right? The point of the squid was to get the entire world to stop going into nuclear war. A giant squid landing in New York and blowing up the entire city is pretty insane. It got the attention of other nations and they came to the U.S.'s aid because they feared that there is something bigger out there that can destroy the planet. I think tricking the world into stopping a near nuclear war for fear of aliens or some other force out there was ingenious.

Now yes I guess it could work the same with using Dr. Manhattan, but that doesn't justify not using the squid because both are unrealistic in the world that Watchmen is in (which is an alternate REAL world) but they happened anyway.

That's my two cents
What do you guys think?

Edit : HA! I meant to write SPOILERS. Sorry guys.

Please add the option of necessary evil. I would like the squid, but I understand the change.

[Show spoiler]If you look at the trailer carefully, there is a scene where Ozymandias is standing in front of a series of TV monitors in what almost looks like a stance of victory. The images on the screen are all of DIFFERENT TV stations, as can be seen by the graphics on the screens, but all the TVs have the SAME THING. In other words, an interview or special report that looks like a disaster report, much like the president announcing the catastrophe. Although they said they would change the film ending, they implied it was not a major change but I am still not sure what they changed or how.

And I suggest when using spoilers, type in the spoilers command that looks like this:

I would like for it to be there but if they can achieve the same effect without big alterations of the story, i'm good.

It is possible the monster is not in the movie, as it is the strangest part of the story... BUT whatever he does would have to be HUGE and have a SERIOUS effect on the same scale as the original story.
As long as the end result achieves the same thing as the book, I am ok with it, since I understand movies can never be 100% faithful to the books. But these are fans of the book, and they will keep as close to the original intent of the story as possible.

The ending always seemed a little too naieve to me. One isolated event like the one that occurs in the book does not strike me as something that would get the desired end result. It seems like people would just find a way to explain it off and go about their merry way.

Now replace that with manhattan - someone that they are familliar with for years and are well aware of what he can do? That I can see unifying people more.

Sadly, this is probably the one part of the book that makes it faulter in my opinion. While the general concept is good, counting on a single event kinda hand-waves over basic human nature.

For those unfamiliar with the ending change, here is an article describing it in more detail. Possible spoilers ahead.

[Show spoiler]To me, the squid thing in the book was not so much a way to make people go off on their merry way... it was a way of presenting the world with a GREATER danger than the HUGE political ones at the time. During 1985, the Cold War was at its peak and everyone was sure the world would end in a nuclear proliferation, atomic attacks that would end life. This did not happen, but in this alternate world, the presence of Dr Manhattan increased the tension even more. Once he was out of the picture, they made their move afraid he might come back.
Either way, it was this timing that Ozymandias was relying on. He knew the increased tension would put everyone on edge, and that only something as drastic as an alien attack, something that threatened ALL humanity and not just one country, could unite the people and ned the war.

Just to clarify, the atomic bomb-esque ending is one of several apparently being considered and will be shown to test audience. FX work has been going on for the "squid" for quite some time.
In my opinion though, I think they should go with the "squid" ending rather than another one. The whole point of Ozy's plan is to unite the earth against a supposed alien invasion, whilst framing Manhattan puts the spotlight on the US. I guarantee you if cities around the world were blowing up in a nuclear fashion and an American superhuman (used in the Vietnam War offensively) was thought to be behind it, missiles would be flying. Thusly, the "squid" works because it has no connection to anything or anyone on earth, uniting humanity against this unknown other.

Edit: I see I am not alone in my thinking.

The atomic blast is a dream sequence from the book... not the end of the movie.

Yeah, I guess you have a point the movie adaptions are usually never 100% faithful to the source material.

Zack Snyder just released new footage and a new movie poster for the film. The footage looks cool and the poster is pretty epic.

This is for the people who didn't know, so if someone reading already posted it and wants to give me an earful, please don't. I'm just informing those who didn't know.

Sorry, I figured having the topic of the thread being about the ending and writing spoilers on the title would prevent those who are unknown to the Watchmen story from getting spoiled. Plus it helps the lazy ones, including me lol, not having to write that code.

This is why I love the the squid ending. Totally agree with you 100%. Of course, as someone stated, adaptations are never 100% and I can accept that because it's Hollywood. Makes you realize though why Alan Moore is so bitter about his graphic novels being adapted.
