Exclamation PS3 audio setup

Hello everyone... I'm new to the site, but have been an enthusiast for quite some time now. I am a little confused about PS3's audio capabilities. Currently I have the Sony str-dg800 and a full 7.1 speaker setup. I am looking at upgrading as it's beginning to seem outdated. I was looking at the Onkyo 805 or Yamaha 1800. My question is: Is the PS3 capable of producing the uncompressed audio of DTS-HD or Dolby True HD tracks????? I have gotten mixed understandings of this. Any explanation would be greatly appreciated!

hello, and welcome to the site!

yes, the ps3 is capable via linear pcm (not bitsream). so, you just have to make sure that the ps3 is set to send audio out via lpcm and is connected to your receiver thru hdmi.

here is a link to help you on your way:

Thanks prankster, that is very helpful. Dumb question: What (if any) difference is there between linear pcm and bitstream in terms of quality? Also, I seemed to have handshake issues with my str-dg800 so I have only been able to run optical connections with my current setup. Am I likely to have the same problems with the onkyo 805 or yamaha 1800? Is one more compatible than the other? Thanks again!

With those two receivers, there should be no discernible difference in audio quality from bitstream to lpcm since the lpcm would still be a digital signal coming over the hdmi cable and utilizing the dac's in the receiver.

Not a handshake issue, the str-dg800 doesn't accept audio over hdmi. This is from the sonystyle website:
Quote:
HDMI™ Technology : Pass-through
Both of the receivers you mentioned accept audio over hdmi so this will not be an issue.

Excellent, thanks for the info. If I go with the onkyo, that site seems to be one of the best deals. From what I've seen on this site, it seems like the onkyo is probably the better of the two...

They both are pretty good. Supposedly some people have had issues with the Onkyo receiver overheating, but that was only ten people out of more than 150 reviews that i've seen online.

Keep in mind that the link I gave earlier is to a refurbished Onkyo 805, you can get a new one at amazon for under $625.

It is. Its Burr-Brown DAC's and heavy duty power supply make sure of that.
