Surely an anniversary edition should be coming?
I truly hope so, I think it deserves a Criterion release for sure.

Criterion doesn't need to do anything for The Fly. The current disc is packed with great extras that I doubt criterion could add to. All that really needs to be done is for Fox to do a remaster. Hopefully that will happen someday soon. And if not the current disc will work just fine.

Whatever happened to the third Fly movie that was talked about years ago? Or was it a reboot? I don't even remember who the director was that was supposedly interested in taking it on, but I remember reading him saying something about doing it and actually having the creature mutating to the point where he would actually have wings and the ability to fly.

Well Criterion could do said remaster. Or Scream. I don't really care who does it but I would buy the hell out of it.

I remember hearing a few yrs back I think that Cronenberg was interested in directing another reboot of The Fly & that he has some ideas about it already. That's obviously gone nowhere so far.

I thought that a Criterion release for the anniversary would be inevitable, but apparently not. Kind of lost hope when I found out they let Carrie and Dead Ringers escape from their grasp and didn't capitalize on the 25th anniversary of The Silence of the Lambs.

For those unaware, there's a The Fly collection scheduled for release in Australia on the 16th of November, which includes The Fly II (1989):

I might be interested in this set but will hold out a while longer to see if someone, hopefully Scream Factory, might pick up The Fly II. Not really interested in the older films but if this is the only way to get the '89 film then I'll go for it. Hard to believe the '89 film still hasn't been upgraded.

There is a good chance that the titles in this set will be sold separately a few months later, it's happened with other sets from this company, such as the Psycho collection for example.

Though I know I can get "Return of the Fly" in one of those Vincent Price Collections, I definitely need to import the standalone copies of "Curse of the Fly" and "The Fly II" (unless Scream Factory or Fox themselves releases a stateside blu-ray).

Same here, I'll wait a few months to see if someone releases it here, but then import if I have to.

Was the Fear of Flesh documentary made for the 2005 DVD release or was it repurposed from a Laserdisc release?

Agree with the sentiment of others that a new blu-ray would be great, maybe with a new retrospective doc too.

I got the Fly 2 "collector's series" DVD set a while back at a used media store for a couple bucks (brand new). Watched it tonight. Talk about a strong setup that flops and dies in the last act. I was thinking in the first half "why do people hate this it's pretty solid" and then the second half just gets dumber and dumber with worse and worse editing and action. Also why does the fly look nothing like a fly? I guess he was more human or whatever but it pales next to the creepy and horrifying creature in Cronenberg's movie.

DVD looked surprisingly good upscaled (to 4k even!). I collect sci-fi so I would get a BD of it, but the DVD is fine really.

To be fair, "Return of The Fly" is an equally dumb sequel to the 1958 original, so i'd say "The Fly II" is in good company.

Yeah, it kinda stinks as a sequel to the masterful David Cronenberg film, but as a stupid, popcorn munching creature feature (albeit with a really out of place deformed Old Yeller inspired subplot), its awesome.

Thankfully, we were spared of a really weird sorta in-name third film where Michael J. Fox takes over a Eric Stoltz' role for the second time where he's surrounded by sub-par English actors, no obligatory Fly monster (but plenty of other gross scientific mishaps) and is tasked with stupid trans-pacific teleportation experiments gone awry. I'm also thankful that bizarre aborted mid 2000s attempt at a second remake that had a big hook where the Fly monster actually "flies" for once never came to be.

I'm not knocking it too hard, it was entertaining, I just thought the climax fight and stuff was really poorly done. If that had been better then the whole movie would have been pretty solid IMO.

Someday they'll remake The Fly again I am sure, and yes I bet he flies.

I saw the '86 Fly theatrically and it simply isn't a visually vibrant movie; once a blu attains a certain vintage many fans cry out for a remaster but the truth is The Fly may well look as good as it's going to. Sure, you may get some slight improvements but it's never going to be an eye-opening revelation.

I think this is true of a lot of older titles on blu.

I owned the first release of The Fly on laserdisc and it was bare-bones, that documentary, along with all the other extras, were done for the DVD.

They could call it The Revenge of McFly
