oops sorry meant optical

i know optical cant carry 5.1 pcm but can optical do pcm to front left ,front right and centre? is it proper uncompressed sound?

Optical can only send 2.0 pcm uncompressed. Left and Right.

so what are you actually getting in the surround speakers if you apply pro logic II to that

It's matrixed, the prossessors in the receiver are decoding the2 channel into a mixed 5.1. So yes it might sound quite well but it is not true 5.1. So if you put your ear upto the main speakers you can still hear the dialogue faintly in it. This is good quality prologic but not true 5.1.

To avoid any confusion, digital optical can carry:

2.0 channels of uncompressed (lossless) PCM audio and ...

...up to 6.1 discrete channels of compressed (lossy) PCM audio.
