Default The Eyes of My Mother (B&W horror film)

Quote:
In their secluded farmhouse, a mother, formerly a surgeon in Portugal, teaches her daughter, Francisca, to understand anatomy and be unfazed by death. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor horrifyingly shatters the idyll of Francisca’s family life, deeply traumatizing the young girl, but also awakening some unique curiosities. Though she clings to her increasingly reticent father, Francisca’s loneliness and scarred nature converge years later when her longing to connect with the world around her takes on a distinctly dark form.

The Eyes of My Mother is in theaters and on demand December 2.

[Show spoiler]This would've been a great title for a Harry Potter memoir, lol.

I'm guessing the title literally refers to someone's eyeballs. Lovely stuff.

Why is it in black and white?

Is it an artistic decision? A financial decision? I just don't understand why a movie would be shot like a modern movie and then make it black and white.

Edit - I just looked it up and it was shot on a Red Epic Dragon. So the choice to make it b&w was done in post. Why?

Well WHY NOT? Why does everybody think if you do something in black and white it has to be because it's referencing old movies or something. What's wrong with actually just wanting to use a black and white colour scheme? The cinematography is gorgeous, and chiarascuro is played with to great effect, so why the heck not?

People who think all modern movies should be colour are the same kind of people who are baffled at someone using a ratio besides 2.39:1. The kind of people that think every movie has to fit the latest trends.

Yeah, there have been plenty of modern movies shot in black and white for artistic decisions. I love myself some good black and white!

It's a perfectly legitimate question. My befuddlement isn't me deeming it right or wrong (I haven't even seen the movie), but why the filmmakers deemed it necessary to be in b&w to begin with. Because it comes off pretentious to me when you use a 6k digital camera and then take all the color away from the picture. I'm just curious why they did it, and "because we can" is a pretty lame reason.

I mean, you know regardless of how expensive it is, you never see the image that the camera produces 100% untouched, right? Doesn't matter what movie you're watching, they will take that image, and color grade it. They'll shift the tones and saturation. What's the difference between making something black & white, or making it very desaturated and cool in tone with lots of blues? It all comes down to how the director envisions his film looking, and doing things to the raw camera image to make it match what's in his/her head.

I get it. I know how it's done. I just want to know why they went this route. With recent movies in or with b&w (The Artist, A Girl Walks Alone in the Night, and Kill Bill), I know why they made those choices. My question is why did the director and producers think this was the right route to take this movie? What makes being in b&w the right choice over color?

Well I don't think any of us will know that answer until we see the film, no?

mother had extreme colour-blindness only allowing her to see black and white. Title is Eyes of My Mother. You see through her eyes: black and white.

[Show spoiler]not really lolololol

An imagine in black and white is viewed and received differently than an image in colour. Chances are the director wanted the images to be received the way they would in black and white...

So it quite clearly is you judging it to be wrong, unless pretentious is a compliment now.

There's nothing wrong with not having a thematic or script based reason for black and white. If it looks good and suits the visuals or mood of the story, it's a good choice, end of. There's nothing "pretentious" about black and white. It's a grading choice like any other. Is it "pretentious" when someone does a blue and teal grade? A washed out grade with a brown tint? A rainbow of colours? The idea that a movie can be pretentious just because of a SLIGHTLY out of the ordinary grade is absurd.

Black and white allows the audience to not think about colour cues and focus purely on the difference between light and dark, and whether they planned it that way or they just decided to flick off the saturation and saw that it looked fantastic, the only thing that matters is if it feels appropriate in the film, and it absolutely does.

This really doesn't have much to do with eyeballs tbh.

This movie was really really good. One of the best horror films of the year.
Get's very dark, and very disturbing. F***ed up is how I would describe this film. The black and white cinematography was gorgeous, and the lead actress was wonderful in it.

To quote Roger Ebert, "Color is more realistic, but B&W is more dreamlike and mysterious."

I love the look of B&W cinema. Every time I watch The Mist, I always choose the B&W version on the Blu-Ray. In fact, I don't think I've watched it in color since the theater.
