Default Optimal distance from TV to "see" HD?

Is there a - well - recommended maximum distance from a TV to make use of a HD?

What I mean is : A 70" 1080p super-screen won't help if you watch the movie from a distance of half a mile ... you probably won't notice much of a difference between a BD and a DVD pic ... on the other hand, a small 32" at 720p might be great if you sit at merely a meter distance ...

Is there some rule of thumb that helps here? Thanks!

Talking Couple thoughts.

Well, I've heard you take the diagonal screen size in inches, divide by 7, and that should give you the minimum number of feet you should be from the TV. Too far away and you miss all the detail.

BUT! I'm an eye doctor, and if you want to get rid of eyestrain - optical infinity is twenty feet away. So... lesse, that means my screen should be a 140 incher?!? guess I'll have to wait a while for those to hit retail markets (laughs).

I would watch a 1.85 movie on a 16:9 140" screen at about 11 feet
(Scope on a 16:9 140" I'd watch at 9)

2PH or bust!

Wow, that's awesome!!!

Deciazulado, that is exactly how far I am sitting away from my 140 inch screen, 11 feet...

I was afraid I was sitting too close, the picture still seems amazingly clear to me, but its good to know I am not horribly ruining my experiance...

I think that distance chart should be stickied ... should be the first thing to read before buying a TV
