1080i Releases

When adding to the list, please be sure to confirm the 1080i status directly from the Disc, and not from the Cover art, as this can be incorrect and not reliable. Feel free to also ammend the Database listing for the title, if it is currently incorrect by using the Edit function (this will be approved at a later time by Admin).

Television Shows natively filmed in 1080i (Example: Underbelly), do not need to be listed, as this was how they are correctly presented. Re-releases featuring Alternative Art, but the same 1080i master (Example: Once Were Warriors) also do not need to be listed unless their disc has been remastered / updated to 1080p.

If a film is filmed at 24 frames per second and then encoded at 25fps (on Blu-ray that's done by 1080/50i which is 50 frames per second displaying half the information at a time) the end result is that the film runs 4% faster and can (depending on whether or not the studio fixes the pitch) result in a pitch increase of 4%.

Apart from not representing the film the way it's intended for those of us with quite picky ears it can be incredibly distracting because every bit of the soundtrack is wrong. With 12 notes in a scale that means each note is 8.33% apart so with a pitch increase of 4% everything is now not a "real" note. The end result is anyone with perfect pitch will pull their hair out as they're forced to listen to the soundtrack.

Between that and the jitter caused by the incompatible framerates I was a very early adopter of importing DVDs from NTSC countries etc for their correctly pitched audio and complementary frame rates.

1080i isn't necessarily 'worse' than 1080p. I've seen a few 1080i releases that looked perfectly fine.

The difference lies in how the display lines are scanned. While both resolution standards display 1080 vertical lines, with 1080i the lines are "interlaced" - meaning the odd-numbered lines are painted on the screen first followed by the even-numbered lines. With 1080p, the lines are displayed consecutively in a single pass, as opposed to the odd-numbered lines alternating with the even-numbered lines.

It's all a bunch of techo mumbo jumbo.. you really just need to make your own mind up by comparing a couple of releases if you get the chance.

Atex pretty much laid it out right. The Audio on 25fps releases is probably the biggest issue.

How does one determine if a disc is actually 1080i? Does it have to be checked in a PC or something?

Depending on your Player, I think it can show up using the Info button on the remote.

One thing that's important to note as some releases are 1080/50i such as The Way Way Back and subjected to PAL speed up whereas others like Slither are 1080/60i so don't run shorter or have any pitch change.

Yeah there will eventually need to be a time where people will have to click on or ask about certain releases for more details. We can't catch everything but we try to atleast cut down on some confusion.

Thanks to everyone for listing titles and adding to this thread. Thanks! I didn't mean to cause a hassle for LordCrumb though and the thread could very quickly get out of hand if music and documentary blu-rays are added (because I imagine many of them would be 1080i). I appreciate the list in progress and hope more people add to that list, but perhaps the best use for this thread might be if somebody watches a new/recently released blu-ray and notices that it's in 1080/50i, they could list it on this thread.

That way, if another terrible blu-ray comes out such as the Australian release of KILLING THEM SOFTLY (1080i, 1.78 ratio instead of 2.40) other people here can find out about it quickly and not have to waste their money on it.

I might have a few more.. the worst thing is, half of them still say 1080p on the back cover specs. Can be bring forth some kind of class-action lawsuit for false advertising and force these distributors to remaster and provide us with free replacements? Universal, Vendetta and Accent are definitely the worst offenders here.

Remember this is the perfect oppurtunity to update their Database listings. If you have confirmed specs, you can either Edit their listings yourself, or you can leave the info when you post a title and I can add in the correct info.

Viral Factor: 1080i/50, Chinese DTS-HD MA 5.1, Sub Eng, 2.33:1

I happen to have this disc so was able to scan it and get the info. Just please be sure to submit correct info.

I always double-check.. luckily my players have a nice detailed menu display which includes audio bitrates, codecs and frame-rates.

Blow Out and Dead Ringers from Umbrella both have lossy audio.
