Default October weekly Standalone sales up 25-50%

Buried in the following article is some news about an uptick in standalone sales:

http://www.videobusiness.com/article...?desc=topstory

Quote:
“We have been working with key retailers to put together account specific offers, where we bundle a device or the PlayStation 3 remote with one of our titles, which gives the customers value in return,” said Dorinda Marticorena, Warner senior VP of worldwide marketing and high-def. “You will see a plethora of offers from Warner in November and December.”

She believes that consumers are now especially primed to purchase Blu-ray players, as manufacturers began offering models at new low pricing levels in October. Originally $399 for much of this year, Sony and Samsung BD Live-ready models fell to $299 at the end of September

Regardless of a tightening economy, October set-top weekly sales are 25% to 50% higher than prior weeks, according to Marticorena.

“We are encouraged about the momentum we are seeing with Blu-ray players in October,” she said.

Excellent news.

My local Future Shop has piles and piles of the Sony S350 in anticipation, and they are selling right now at CAD$279 (about US$235).

This is great news for existing and new Blu-ray users. With the price drop in older model players, which in turn will get them into someones home, the demand will increase for a larger demographic of BD movies, musicals, classics, sports, etc., and should in turn, drive down initial cost of BD's. Hopefully we can get to a point where new releases are in the $22-$27 range. And older catalog releases in the $16 neighborhood. One things for sure, this holiday season will be all about home theater & entertainment products. Gona be alot of Blu-ray players and HDTV's under tree's this year.
