Overrated? This is the biggest movie since Titanic. It's garnered more critical acclaim than almost any movie ever, grossed more money than all but one movie, and will certainly have a statsheet full of Oscar nods. Overrated is when one or two of those things don't happen, but when they all happen together, it's either rated just fine or underrated. I wish people would stop saying that.

Funny you mention it. Titanic is another highly over-rated movie.

The only reason most of those events happened was Heath Ledger's death.

I think people relate the word 'overrated' with them not being in love with something, so everybody else is wrong. And that's just not the case. If you asked 100 people if they were going to give this film a thumbs up or down, sites like Boxofficemojo, rottentomatoes, and imdb put it at a at least a 90% approval rate. Where does the overrating come in?

damn you really didnt follow the movie since and right after the first teaser where you hear the joker's voice. That is what brought the hype and well deserved I may add.

I felt that dark knight was overrated. I prefer begins to it.. I also like the tim burton films much better then either film.. that is just me.
my fundamental problem with both films.. is that it was easier for me to beleive that a man could dress like a bat in tim burton's world.. the real world that nolan used was too real.

having said that.. I do collect many comic book related movies and I will get it.

I never saw this in Imax so I am unaware of which scenes are in IMAX ratios. I know about the fist six minutes, The Armored car chase, but I was wondering about the others. I heard the Lambo scene was shot in Imax but that is tied in whith the Jokers hospital Scene, so is that all Imax or do they switch back and forth. I also Know that the end of movie was filmed in Imax, but does that included the Jokers end? Some clarification would be great. Thanks

I think its been well documented that tons of teenie bopper girls carried Titanic's box office success to see Dicaprio. Nothing to be ashamed off.

The same can be said for TDK, just like the bunch of Comic Book and Superhero geeks which carried TDK to the box office success it experienced this year.

That's just the way the cookie crumbles.....

No, it isn't. Visual storytelling is exactly what it sounds like...telling stories with visuals. But since the advent of the sound era in cinema, the combination of the word and the image have blended so that one supports the other. There's nothing subtle about the visuals in Citizen Kane or The Grauduate -- milestones in cinema. Meanwhile the Godfather is highly restrained in its visuals and is chok-a-blok with monologues and dialog. Another masterpiece of cinema.

The world of cinema is vast and diverse -- there is no "one size fits all" methodology. You deride and dismiss Nolan and Goyer's Dark Knight. Fine. Just don't pretend it has anything to do with the realm of "visual storytelling" and monologues. I'd have more respect for your opinion if you just came right out and said you thought the movie was pretentious.

No, Titanic was a mass hit because it appealed to people of all ages. The stereotype is that teenage girls went to see it over and over again, but the truth is that Titanic played to all ages and genders.

The Dark Knight was a hit because it was a sequel to a movie that was also very good, and the death of Heath Ledger spurned a curiosity factor -- the rave reviews and the great word of mouth combined with all these to make the film a smash.

I think The Dark Knight was overrated, which isn't to say it wasn't a great movie. I think I prefer Batman Begins a little better. I think the pacing on BB was a lot better.

I think one of my main problems with TDK is the fact that they crammed a lot of story into a short time. The whole Hong Kong sequence with Lau (the whole Lau subplot actually) was a little forced and did not really need to take up as much time as it did. Also, Eckhart's Two-Face was too strong of a character to only be around for the last 30 minutes. They should have saved it for the third film.

In my opinion, the movie had a logical conclusion, and then it went on for another 30 minutes.

With that said, I think that TDK was a great movie, hopefully a third installment will serve to tighten up the story. The second act of a trilogy usually has a handicap of having no real beginning and no real end.

You're exactly right about Titanic. I was a married, 22 year old soldier in the Army when it came out, and I saw it 4 times in the theater. I'm pretty sure I wasn't a teenage girl. It was just a fantastic spectacle and experience (albeit with some iffy dialogue). Same thing with The Dark Knight. Ledger's death no doubt had some extra influence on its success, but the quality of the film and the experience has carried it. For them to say it's all because of Ledger's death is ridiculous.

After all, how much did The Crow make after Brandon Lee's death? I know they aren't quite on the same level, celebrity-wise, but still...

This is why Queen of the Damned is the third highest grossing film of all time, just about John Candy's last film Wagons East.
