Default Buying a 2k Blu-ray when a 4k Blu-ray version exists

Next year, maybe June at the earliest, I think I might be upgrading to a 4K television set and a XBox One S, maybe to the XBox One S early next year and sell my XBox One. I'm hesitant to buy a 2k blu-ray when a 4k blu-ray of the same movie exists, even with the higher price of the 4k version, because I think I will be going 4k sometime next year. However, I don't mind still buying the 2k versions if the movie does not exist in a 4k blu-ray version. Also unless I want to see the movie badly, I'll just wait until I have my 4k television and XBox One S and then buy the 4k blu-ray if it exists. Would it be a good idea to slow down my blu-ray buying for the movies that are also in 4k blu-ray given my situation?

Considering 4k sets come with a blu ray disc, might as well future proof your collection now if you know you're upgrading soon.

Most films won't even be coming out on 4K physical disc, so most anything except new blockbusters and some big blockbuster catalog titles are safe to buy.

I mostly switched to buying UHD combo packs when available since I plan to upgrade early next year or even sooner. It's only $5 more usually and I'll have a UHD catalog on day one, which is exciting. That said when it's a movie I don't care as much about and the price difference is huge I might get the normal BD. I just got Warcraft and Tarzan on normal BD for example because they were $6 and I was like screw it.

The real question is how many BDs I own that I will replace with UHDs of the same transfer. My guess is not a lot, but we'll see how much I love the format when I get it.

You'll have to investigate each 4k movie, some of them have theatrical releases and not extended that you can get on 2k version the main example being "X-Men Days of Futures Past" when by my opinion The Rouge Cut of the film is better than what is currently available in 4k.

I've kind of/sort of held off on buying movies with an UHD release, or in some cases I've balked at some of the new 4K remasters on blu-ray knowing that an UHD disc is quite likely. But I haven't actually bought any UHD titles yet. I also haven't quite shut down *all* blu-ray buying (still buying Criterion's, and cheap bargain catalog titles for $3.99 regardless of what UHD may come down in the future). But in a weird way I'm more comfortable when I see a blu-ray is sourced from a new 2K restoration or from a 2K Di, rather than from 4K. Even if there isn't a UHD yet, if the source if 4K In the back of my mind I think a UHD is likely. As someone above noted, if the source is 2K DI it probably isn't really worth waiting for UHD anyway.

I got all excited when i saw Deadpool and The Revenant UHD price glitch <$10 at Target, unfortunately I was too late and missed out. Also thought about Batman vs. Superman for $9.99 - but since the blu-ray was only theatrical cut I decided to just hold off on that as well until I get an UHD player. I probably should have just pulled the trigger there and made that my first UHD disc.

I don't see myself upgrading soon, and since the difference in quality on a UHD screen between a BD and a UHD disc seems even smaller than DVD VS BD on a Full HD dispaly, I'm not bothered so much.

Plus, I would need to be much more interested in the movies released on UHD to begin with, while we won't see An Autumn Afternoon on UHD anytime soon.

Sure. I buy 2K all the time. Especially as most of the 4k discs are upscaled 2K anyway.

Seems like so many movies are mastered in 2K anyway, so I guess the real gain there is the potential for higher color depth / more advanced surround sound CODECs. As someone who's still exceedingly happy with what he sees from his 720p Plasma and loves what he hears from his 2 channel system... I think I'm good right now. Now that I'm in my late 30's and about to start a family, my priorities have indeed shifted... I pretty went from buying multiple DVD's every Tuesday, to maybe buying a half a dozen movies a year, if that. Mostly Disney/Pixar movies, which aren't out in 4K anyway!

True, but the wider color gamut is a worthwhile improvement (assuming the UHD display has high DCI coverage) in most cases when calibrated. HDR is debatable given the lack of standards, etc. Some people are liking SDR with wider color gamut stripping out the HDR which is what I will be doing on my RS500.

"Upscaled" should not be as an alarming of a word as much as "revisionist" should be.

Any older movies, I'm happy enough with a quality 2K blu ray release. Newer movies that were shot with HDR in mind are worth future proofing though.

But again, it's just not about resolution. I'm not sure why no one thinks about the other aspects especially the improvement with wider color gamut. I've seen some comparisons lately and it's real on a properly set-up display or projector.

Resolution is only half the equation. People seem to forget about HDR.

I've only been buying 4k blu-rays when a 4k master was used. Except for Batman vs. Superman because I wanted to watch the extended version right away.

I'm buying 4k of brand new releases I'm interested in (and setting a rule of no more than $20... which was the same rule I applied to blu ray when it first came out)

I recently upgraded to 4k and am happy to report that there is a nice uptick in color and PQ..... but not so much that I plan to upgrade my current blu ray collection...

I think this format is good for brand new titles and perhaps quality remasters of classics...

I am doing the same as I am upgrading to 4K some time before the year is out. However, my cap is $25 instead of $20.

I'm with most posters here -- I'll buy the 4K version if it makes sense or if it was (re)mastered in 4K, and for a cheap price. I have a 4K set that doesn't have HDR, but the expanded color and detail is still nice for those few films.

Hopefully within the next year I'll be upgrading to an HDR set -- we'll see.

Until classic films get 4K UHD remasters, I really don't have any interest in 4K Blu-rays, and as it stands right now will there ever be a 4K Blu-ray of 2001: A Space Odyssey or Lawrence of Arabia? Kind of doubtful. I'm very interested in getting a 4K TV, but I'm in no hurry. Have noticed the prices are coming down fast now.

most 4k tvs/recievers/players upscale anyways, so BR is fine for me at the moment.

I'll buy 4k when the prices come down.
