Here's a fan remaster of the movie. I haven't checked it out myself yet but it's almost 5 hours long.

ShenmueHD.com has been registered by Sega. Hopefully it's a sign that remasters are coming and not just them buying up domains to stop other people registering them.

Makes sense to buy them up whether remastered or not to stop domain squatters.

There was an article a few years ago online that the remasters have been finished. Don't know if its true or not. Hopefully they are not dumb enough to wait till Shenmue 3 releases to release them. If they pull a stunt like that,i will buy the remasters first, and then after a few months buy part 3. The original is still my favorite of the 2,plus it was a much easier game than part 2.

I remember seeing an article on CVG (website is now gone from the internet so can't find the link) that it was rated by one of the rating boards. Even though nothing has ever turned up.

From memory it said that Shenmue HD had already been completed for almost a year (this was circa 2012) but SEGA were weighing up their options for a release.

That might have something to do with the licensing rights holding them back from a release that they mentioned last year.

I saw this from 2012 too, that Sega said they were working on Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia HD

Quote:
In an interview with Game Reactor, Sega brand manager Ben Harborne said the two titles are the most requested by fans.

"I can tell you what it's going to be: Shenmue," Harborne said. "And Skies of Arcadia as well.

"So those are a couple of our most requested games. I can't say yes or no, but we may be working on them."

Sega has been dipping into its Dreamcast library to produce HD ports for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, previously releasing Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5: Part 2 and Sega Bass Fishing.

Things could be getting more interesting. I wonder if it does come to fruition, that the games could have some interconnect-ability like with the Mass Effect series, i.e. keeping save data between games.

Like all of you, I'm really looking forward to this game and the possibility of Shenmue I and II in HD.

Shenmue I was a magical experience at the time and unlike anything I'd played. Although I got to later play both the Dreamcast PAL and Xbox Shenmue II versions, it's the original that remains dear to me. The HD remaster should have been released years ago and I do wonder whether it will all hold up still, but as long as we have at least HD visuals, analogue controls and the possibility of carrying on save data from I to II and maybe III (though not being made by SEGA) would be brilliant.

I replayed I last year on the Dreamcast, and I think todays open world games have spoiled us.

I remembered I as this huge open world where we could do anything and interact with the world in almost any way.

Going back to it I realised just how "small" the world actually was. In terms of locations there are only really 4 areas in the game, but it's the density of the game that really made it stand out. Being able to go inside buildings and use telephones and talk to strangers in the street. As well as being able to pick up items in shops and play actual games in the Arcade etc.

The size of the game in contrast to other sandbox games like GTA is actually quite limited, but the depth to the world is almost unsurpassed.

I know what you mean, the game was groundbreaking when it was released and looked gorgeous. Unless you experienced it first time round and loved it, I guess gamers nowadays will scratch their heads and wonder what all the fuss is about.

Doing all the things you mentioned just gave it a realism games didn't have at the time. If I remember correctly, the game is set in 1986 in Dec and they modelled it after a real Japanese location, had day and night transition and even the weather of the actual time. For someone who had never travelled and never experienced Japanese culture, it did make me fall in love with how quaint it all was. Then came Christmas in Dobuita...

Experiences of their time fall into nostalgia. I would like to play the HD versions and then Shenmue 3 for the story but I also know it won't be the same experience given the games we have today. Same thing happened with FF7 when I played whilst we had PS3.

Mmm, there are some games I find difficult to go back to because of how they've aged, despite the hours and hours I played them and loved them originally. The original RE1 falls into that category now. HD has spoiled us, though I think generally speaking this generation of gaming so far (much like movies) has been disappointing and not nearly as diverse.

Thanks Mavrick. That's hopeful news of making Shenmue 1 and 2 available on the PS4.

I have Shenmue 2 for the Dreamcast, though I have to hook the console back up to play it which only takes a few minutes. Will also play Sega's 18 Wheeler, Sword of the Berzerk and Crazy Taxi while I'm at it.

I hope it's coming too, It was fun to play through on the Dreamcast again but to see it in HD would be glorious.

I have II on DC too, but the whole thing being subtitled made the game way too slow for me these days, so I went and bought an Xbox to play the Dubbed version

Yeah, there was a lot of text to read through. I would like to just get to the next task most games without having to read a lot of text, but some puzzles if I remember, required careful attention to the dialog/clues/text. The Dubbed version sounds good and I can imagine that would be offered for the update too. Thanks.
