From memory it said that Shenmue HD had already been completed for almost a year (this was circa 2012) but SEGA were weighing up their options for a release. That might have something to do with the licensing rights holding them back from a release that they mentioned last year. I saw this from 2012 too, that Sega said they were working on Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia HD Quote:

Things could be getting more interesting. I wonder if it does come to fruition, that the games could have some interconnect-ability like with the Mass Effect series, i.e. keeping save data between games.

Like all of you, I'm really looking forward to this game and the possibility of Shenmue I and II in HD.
Shenmue I was a magical experience at the time and unlike anything I'd played. Although I got to later play both the Dreamcast PAL and Xbox Shenmue II versions, it's the original that remains dear to me. The HD remaster should have been released years ago and I do wonder whether it will all hold up still, but as long as we have at least HD visuals, analogue controls and the possibility of carrying on save data from I to II and maybe III (though not being made by SEGA) would be brilliant. |

I remembered I as this huge open world where we could do anything and interact with the world in almost any way. Going back to it I realised just how "small" the world actually was. In terms of locations there are only really 4 areas in the game, but it's the density of the game that really made it stand out. Being able to go inside buildings and use telephones and talk to strangers in the street. As well as being able to pick up items in shops and play actual games in the Arcade etc. The size of the game in contrast to other sandbox games like GTA is actually quite limited, but the depth to the world is almost unsurpassed. |
