Default Which receiver to buy?

I am looking at 2 receivers right now...

The Onkyo TX-SR706 and the Yahama RX-V861. I have to be honest in that I'm not much of an audio person. My budget is about $1000. I will be using it in a 13 x 16 ft room watching TV the longer distance. My set up is a 42' Pioneer and PS3 as my blu-ray player. I also have a Dish Network VIP-722 HD DVR receiver hooked up. For my research, I checked out the reviews in Sound & Vision magazine and they both are rated very highly. From a pricing stand point the Onkyo goes for about $341 on Amazon and the Yahama is about $310 at a local Tweeter that is going out of business. (It normally retails for $899) Any suggestions on what I need to look for? I attached the reviews. The Yahama review is off by a model #. I couldn't an exact match on the RX-861

Check out www.tvcity.tv

I went there when I was shopping my 1800. It was going for around 12 to 14 hundred in stores and I got it for a little over 8 hundred (in march)

Good luck and enjoy,

To me, it doesn't really matter how the reviewer thinks about the sounds and video processing. All I really read about their review is the functionality of each equipment. I have an old Onkyo receiver DS-939 and still sounded really great for stereo. I bought another Onkyo brand 805 for my surround sound and it is really terrific. Good luck on getting a new receiver.

I would suggest the Yammy, but I do suggest you go and try to listen to them if possible.

I would go with the Onkyo since it can decode HD audio. This will allow you to be future proofed in case you ever decide to get a standalone BD player.

Is there any reason you're looking at the rx-v861 and not at least the rx-v663 or rx-v863? The 861 is the older model and doesn't decode the HD codecs. Unless you really NEED the extra HDMI input that the 863 has you're better off getting the 663 and just getting a HDMI switcher down the road if needed. The difference in power is not something you should use as a deal breaker since you probably won't be able to really tell the difference. The Onkyo is a good receiver also. Bring some CD's and Movies you're very familiar with and listen to both on the same set of speakers if possible.

I'd definitely go with the Onkyo on this one. HD audio is completely worth it!

I would buy the Yamaha RX-v663 or v863
I got an Rx-V863 in line for 634 $ ship from Cal. to Fl. New in an unopened box
The 863 has HD audio, HD radio, Sirus, XM , Bluetooth, Ipod ready, upscales etc
Also has jacks for persence speakers, 2 sub outs and more
Transfomer on my system is great.
Look for the deals and be ready to jump on them
