Sony Pictures Metropolis (2001) (Choice Collection)

I saw Akijama mention this title in the Choice Collection thread, and thought it deserved its own thread. Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis will finally be getting a release in North America, unfortunately it's through Sony's Choice Collection (aka a BD-R).

Eureka (UK) have put out a Region A friendly release for the film too, in standard and Steelbook versions:

Who cares about a BD-R. I already got the UK steelbook pre-ordered (and actually en-route to the states)

For those that have gone region free, Eureka (UK) are releasing the film too, in standard and Steelbook versions:

What's the problem with BD-R?

some players don't read them well, they scratch easily and it's full priced for a burned copy of a movie..

Well in that case, I may just skip this until they decide to wise up.

No way I'm supporting BD-R (well maybe if I can find it for less then $5 - could be from Best Buy's buy 1 get 1 free sale)

Just thank goodness I still have my 1 1\2 DVD discs.

So the UK edition is region locked?
I rarely import, but I would if the UK is pressed and region free. (don't have player that can play it )

I just jumped on the UK import release as well. Not only NOT a BD-R, but a 50GB disc.

Hi, has anybody received the UK release yet? My copy seems to be riddled with picture quality issues, and was wondering if other owners of this release are experiencing the same?

Copied from the steelbook thread: "Greetings from the UK! I also received my steelbook yesterday. Me and my son have just watched it.
I've some bad news I'm afraid, it's not a great blu-Ray. We watched it on a 9' wide projection screen. Firstly, there's a lot of noise in the image. Not just film grain, but video noise. It's not nice, and is distracting on a larger screen. Secondly, the upper edge of the image, (particularly the right hand side) has an almost constant 'wobble'. You can see it especially on, say, a background, a constant slight distorting of the image.
And thirdly, there is a constant patern, of probably 30 or 40 horizontal bars across the image. Especially noticeable on vertical camera pans. They are there for the entire film. After the bluray we popped on the bundled DVD. It's an NTSC DVD I think (480i?), the picture quality is obviously inferior to the bluray. The horizontal bars are still there, but certainly less noticeable due to the excessive video noise on the DVD."

We looked at both the DVD and bluray on our projection screen. We also did a quick check with some other discs to rule out an issue with our gear.

On our 50" plasma, the bluray issues are a LOT less noticeable, but there nonetheless.

I'm sorry to be the bringer of bad news guys. There's nice details and colours (sometimes) in the image, but it's marred by the previously mentioned issues. I'd be happy to chalk this off as a bad disc, as long as any other owners of the disc can confirm their copy is ok. I know I don't post on these forums, but just wanted to share my findings, and maybe give you guys some information.

On the plus side, the 5.1 DTS HDMA soundtrack was pretty solid, however we watched the English dub this evening."

I've since also tried the disc in 3 BD players, a Denon DBP4010, a Panasonic BT310, and an Xbox One. The disc exhibits the same issues on all three players. Obviously it's more noticeable using a larger screen. Check out a downwards camera pan, 33:32. It's really noticeable on that shot.

Can anyone please confirm if it's either an inherent transfer issue, or my disc and/or gear is faulty! Thanks....

actually, yeah... but with the less than stellar reviews - I doubt Eureka will fix some of the flaws the steelbook has, this sounds like a faulty transfer
