Rings $10 million
The Space Between Us $6 million Both of these are movies that have been long on the shelf and will get killed against the Super Bowl (aka the world's biggest open bar). |

Rings will likely win this if only for the lack of competition. I wonder if there will be any sort of horror/thriller fatigue that hinders this at the box office, given that January had Underworld, Resident Evil, Bye Bye Man, and Split. Still, it's a reliable genre, so I'll say it opens around $13 million.
Space Between Us will bomb pretty hard. Since it's a sci-fi romance, it may have a decent second weekend hold over Valentine's Day weekend, but that won't be enough to save it. Estimating $6 million. |

It involves Mars which is usually the kiss of death for movies. Only Ahnuld in his prime and Matt Damon teaming up with Ridley Scott were able to overcome that curse.
For what it's worth, The Space Between Us is a good movie, but it's also one that most folks will be able enjoy in a few months in the comfort of their own home. You don't spend a bunch of money on tickets and concessions for something like that. |

I know SPACE was delayed 2 times, RINGS three times at least. I'm just shocked either film is finally opening. I will see RINGS on Tuesday, cheapie day. I can actually go cause I'm on vacation. Isn't THE COMEDIAN opening this weekend too? It's at my local theater. |

Just found out that January 2017 has taken in less money than the January of 2016 and 2015.
Is it a sign of a not so good year for Hollywood? We'll have to wait and see. Obviously last years January was making a lot of money off of 'The Force Awakens'...Which big films were making money in the Jan of 2015? And in the process, Hollywood has spent way too much time trying to recapture that audience. |
