Oh goodie! I just got the notice from Target that my Parents/White Worm has shipped! Hopefully it'll get here straight away.
EDIT - Oh darnit. Target uses UPS. That means it's a week in transit for sure. I've never had UPS take less than 7 days. Oh well. |

Very enthusiastic Blu-Ray review from DVD Savant, who'd never seen the movie until now:

I remember hating this as a teen, for whatever reason. I had actually forgotten about this movie until this release was announced. Remembering next to nothing about it, I looked up the trailer and decided to give it a second chance. I'll be receiving both Lair and Parents tomorrow.

Back in the days of VHS rentals, I remember that Erol's Video (a local video rental chain) had this in the "Mature" category rather than "Horror." When I finally saw it, I didn't really see why. I also didn't really care for it when I was younger, but I might give it another chance for the right price.

By the way, if your copy of Lair showed up without a slipcover - they know about the issue:
I called Lionsgate today, see if I could get a Lair slip straight from the company and save me some hassle. After being transferred to the customer service department, I explained what was up. They said that there has been some issue with the slip case. All I had to do was give them my email so I can send them a copy of my receipt and a proof of purchase and they would send one right out to me. So, call 877-230-2756, tell them of your lack of slip cover and they can hook you up! |

I received my copy from Amazon this week (w/slipcover, btw) and watched it last night. Although I still have the old DVD, it's been about a decade since I last watched this movie so it was a pretty fresh viewing experience for me.
I forgot there was some pretty decent (if only briefly glimpsed) gore shots in this film. Also, the typical Ken Russell over-the-top hallucinatory cut-aways were a lot more pervasive then I remembered. The campy, sometimes almost comedic elements don't quite gel with the overall gothic horror tone of the movie but any time Amanda Donohoe is on screen, the movie has a weird energy that's hard to resist. On the other hand much of the rest of the cast range from annoying to almost amateurish including a young Hugh Grant. The movie itself generally looks pretty good on Blu-ray. The opening scene looked a bit drab and overly noisy w/clumpy grain but it's more due to the photography then the source or the transfer. Most of the well lit, set-bound scenes look excellent. It's a big step up from the DVD. It's more or less a slightly off-kilter mid-80's cult horror film that is worth a viewing but may not be for everyone, even those who love this period of the horror genre. If I were to say what two films this reminded me of, I'd say Hammer's "The Reptile" and the mid-80's Clive Barker horror film "Rawhead Rex." |

Talking about the site as a whole and the Vestron thread. Thanks for taking it personally though. Always fun.

Thought it'd be fun to do a quick and dirty comparison of the Vestron release and the unofficial film preservation that had been available for the last few years. I didn't feel like spending an extended amount of time trying to line up exact shots so these aren't pixel perfect comparisons, but the results are still interesting.
Results below... [Show spoiler] Someone want to help me out with how to post full resolution screen shots? These were uploaded in 1080p but then adjusted on site. |
