Hey Guys
I am hoping someone will be able to explain crossovers to me. I have researched the topic and from what i understand, whatever you set the crossover too, anything below that setting will be sent to the sub? The problem i am having is that my sound, sounds flat. There does not seem to be much bass period. With my old sony 720 there was an option to set the speakers to small, which fixed this very problem. however on the onkyo 605 there is no such option, so i am assuming i have the crossovers set incorrectly! My front speakers sound incredibly tinny, and not much seems to be reaching the sub, this was especially felt while playing cod4. any suggestions? |

I would assume the 605 is the same as the 805 and I can set speakers to large or small, set cross overs all different (L/R, center, surround, and surround back) and even has "double bass" I beleive.
I am not familiar with your Sony speakers at all so I don't know what they are capable of. What kind of sub do you have? Did your un the audissey set up? |

in what menu did you find the setting for setting the speakers large or small? i think this i my issue but i cannot fin that option anywhere.
i did run the audessey and it set every really weird. almost everything in the negative values, so i have adjusted them the best i could myself, i may have to re run the audessy though i have everything set to 100hz right now and have speakers set to normal instead of bi-amp. Deja vu here... didn't we just have a thread from you about this?
![]() 605 has no "large/small" speaker settings. You can set them to full band if you want... but don't do that. Set their crossovers to about 80hz for your fronts, 100hz for your center and around 120hz for your surrounds as a starting place. I'm guesstimating by looking at your speaker pics. That will send everything below those frequencies (as a rolloff- not as a hard setting) to your sub. Make sure your sub's crossover dial on the back turned all the way to the right so that the Onk can bypass it. If you feel the speakers are distorting or the bass sounds too boomy or poor from the speakers, set the crossover to a higher setting. I wouldn't go above 100hz for your fronts though. Set the LPF of the LFE at its' highest setting to start- I think it's 120hz. If you find that vocals are dipping into the sub, set it lower- some people like 80hz. However, it's possible it's set too low and nothing's coming through. Finally, make sure you don't have any settings as far as the decibel ranges/etc (forget the actual wording) in the Onk's menu that would prevent low end from getting played. Try all of this with "direct" and "Audyssey" modes and either way you should get fine sound. |

I'm just giving you some grief. I didn't know about this stuff either 6 months ago when I got mine. I'm betting if nothing else, if you run the Audyssey and then try the crossover settings I gave as a guideline you'll be able to tweak it to suit you.
Uhm... I just realized- I don't see a sub in your pics or your sig. Do you have one? What kind is it? This could be an issue if it's a passive sub or hooked up incorrectly. If you don't have one and you're setting a crossover... yeah, there's gonna be no bass. |

yeah i have a sub. it is an older sub from an old sony HTIB! a new sub is the next thing on my shopping list! The only setting on the back of the sub is a dial that controls the volume of the sub. in my pics the sub is hidden behind the tv stand for now. It is a powered sub and it is connected via a coax sub cable to the Onk. I really do appreciate the help dude! |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you can set the crossover point of your mains and send the rest to the sub the same as having a SMALL/LARGE setting??
And yea... WHAT KIND OF SUB ARE YOU USING?? -edit:you beat my post. Your HTIB sub is prob lacking huge! (but if it's soon to be replaced, your all good) My DefTech SuperCube 1 has got the police over to my house 3 times, and knocked a shelf with 3 pictures on it off the wall and ripped the anchors straight out of the sheetrock!! awsome Last edited by Blu_Ray_Fan; 11-19-2008 at 04:25 AM. |

the supercube 3 sounds good from the description! I have heard great things about that brand.
I am torn between getting that sony sub and being happy with it for the time being (i only have a small home and think it would be sufficient) or save and wait until i move next year into our next home then get what i want!...i really think my sub is letting me down right now though and want to get the best out of my setup ![]() |
