Default Harrison FMOD passive crossovers!

I've had great success with the hi-pass filters (65 & 85Hz) I bought from ACI that I use on my 2 channel amp. The 65Hz filter yielded the best results & my AVR setting is "Large". This way the whole signal is passed & the filter handles the rest. I then decided to try low-pass filters on my Velo subs. I picked up 2 to play around with (50Hz & 70Hz) http://store.hlabs.com/pk4/store.pl?view_product=9. With the subs crossover turned completely counter clockwise the internal XO is bypassed. The 50Hz filter sounded great but the 70Hz filter was even better.

I was getting great results before using the AVR's XO & the Velo's XO...but this combination of passive filters has taken things to another level. I'm very pleased with the results. Anyone else tried these passive filters? If not they're worth a try.

I hope I did not misundersand your post.

By setting your front speakers to Large and using external passive high pass filter, you are wasting the low frequency content that normally go to the front speakers. By setting the front speakers to Small, the low frequency content will be redirected to the subwoofer where it belongs.

Yep, you're correct in your statement. Sorry but I forgot to include in my post that my NAD AVR has an optional "Enhanced Bass" setting. What that does is send the full range signal to both the speakers set to large & also to the sub. Here's what the manual says: "This feature is particularly useful when one wants to experience maximum bass output. Please note that due to acoustic cancellation effects, the bass response may be uneven when using this setting."

I did play around with different scenerios & the setting that I enjoy the most is the large seeting for my mains, the enhanced bass option on & the 65Hz hi-pass passive filter on my two channel amp. I just feel that the passive filter does a beter job than the AVR's crossover. Now all my other speakers are set to small in the AVR.

I liked the passive hi-pass filter so much that I picked up a few lo-pass filters for my subs (50 & 70Hz, I liked the 70Hz better combined with my 65Hz hi-pass filter on my amp). I bypass the subs XO by turning the crossover setting counter clockwise all the way (the manual states that this setting completely bypasses the subs internal XO). The combo that really delivers the goods are the 65Hz hi-pass on my amp (AVR setting to large for my mains & the enhanced bass option turned on so the mains & sub are getting the full range signal) along with the 70Hz low-pass filters on both my subs.

Exerything just sounds sharper & crisper along with tight yet dynamic bass for both HT & two channel listening. Please don't tell me that I have things ass backwards because it sounds fantastic to me!
