Well, for Band of Brothers, I loved the 16:9 filling goodness. It was very immersive. I also loved watching POTC trilogy, in 2.35:1, it was very cinematic.
Being indecisive again.

Wider is better for me, 2.35ish, but whatever the director prefered/original aspect ratio is all I will tolerate, no matter what format that is.

I agree--Its not what we think is the best aspect ratio, its what the director thinks is the best. Speilberg likes to use 1.85, Jackson uses 2.35.

Personally, I like 2.35, but I'll watch a movie anyway I can get it, except fullscreen

The best aspect ratio is the original aspect ratio. Always. There is no "best ratio". It's just different artists using different canvases to tell different stories.

Assuming a movie about one of my preferred subjects was coming, and the OAR was not decided, I have to say the larger the better. But at what point is it pointlessly too large?

I guess I'll pick 2.55:1.

Back of the box says 1.85:1, but it is full frame, so Warner probably open matted it (hopefully not cropped it). Its real aspect ratio on Blu-ray is 1.78:1.

I don't really like 1.85:1 or lower... it doesn't ruin the experience for me or anything I just prefer bars. Anything that's 2.35:1 and up I like. I like the black bars.

How could I possibly prefer one aspect ratio over another!? All I want is the aspect ratio the movie was filmed in.

Whatever the director chose to shoot in is the way to go.

2:35:1 or 2:40:1 is the best ration for a Action Movie

1:85:1 for dramas or comedy or a chick flick

I still stand with my original post...but I do miss 1.33/1.37 aspect ratios. They were good enough for the early masters so they're good enough for me.

Edit: no reason why filmmakers don't shoot full frame today other than many theaters not being fitted with the correct lenses. Hell, there are even theaters still out there that can't show movies in scope. lol
