Something about fragmenting the chronology seems to serve these gems, and beyond the obvious connections to Linklater's own filmography and the grand work he, Delpy, and Hawke have achieved here, this order also made my favorite entry, Sunset, truly shine.
That's a fascinating way to approach the films. Sunset is my favorite so I'm tempted to give this viewing order a try. Sunset is the shortest of the films, it packs the most immediacy and the way it ends is sublime.

Even in Sunset they aren't the same young souls they were 9 years prior. They have a harder time reconnecting in quite the same way because they are different people. By the end of the film, we have seen them get to the lowest point in their relationship. It is tough to watch and it is emotionally draining. However, with Jesse's final scene, he lights a new spark. Yes, they are different people than they were but that doesn't mean that love is gone and the relationship is done.

Everyone changes and relationships evolve from a highly passionate beginning to a partnership where everyone knows each other's flaws and vulnerabilities. That is what makes long-term relationships vastly more interesting than the first moments of love. It's how people change in regards to the people they are with and how they evolve with each other.
Completely agree.

These films mean a great deal to me. I was lucky enough to attend the Tribeca premiere of Midnight and go to a talk beforehand with Linklater, Hawke and Delpy.

Very, VERY lucky indeed!

[Show spoiler]It's funny that at his heart, Jesse is the same kid as he was on the train. That's who he sees himself as, but he's not. He is a different person. Celine is a different person. It's like when you have a memory of yourself from decades ago, you don't picture yourself as decades younger. You picture yourself in that place as you are now, but everything else is different.

My favorite moment in the end is after Jesse lays the cards on the table regarding his professions of love and how love is in the real world, Celine is obviously broken and for a split second goes for her purse, as if she's about to leave. She hears Jesse sigh in pain because that's the tipping point of the relationship. That's when Celine makes the decision to stay and engage in the "time machine" fantasy. It's so beautiful.

Default Order status update.

Hi All,

As promised here is my order status update: The replacement order I placed shipped in less than 24h. I am now certain that my pre-order I placed in November got stuck in the system. If by chance your pre-order was not dispatched by now give Amazon a call. Ask them to place an new order at the same conditions of the initial order.

I hope it helps.

God they were so beautiful back then.

Oh to be the third wheel in a cognac-fueled, dusk-to-dawn menage a trios with those two crazy kids.

...they'd probably ignore me the entire time.

I was at the Noble today and I almost bought this...full price...the hell with it.

But something held me back.

Perhaps some inextricable feeling that I am bound to these characters and to this story in a way I could never fully articulate to those who have never walked a single step in my tattered, size-13 shoes.

Unlike the many delicate younglings of our community (iscottie), I can actually remember going to see Before Sunrise in the theater when it was first released. I was 19 years old at the time--already connected to Jessie and Celine by the proximity of age, if not beauty and grace.

Just one year later I would travel to Europe to spend six months in Italy in a study abroad program. I visited most of the great cities of that ageless continent and engaged in the kind of transitory relationships that one assumes at the time will last forever...but slowly fade into distant memories as life does what life tends to do. I was never more alive than I was during that period, as the insidious seduction of youthful exuberance convinced me that life was destined to be a never-ending series of beautiful moments that bury their claws into the soul of the seeker and carry him from one glorious wave to the next.

Tens years after that, I saw Before Sunset for the first time. I was living in Washington, DC and working in journalism...and already beginning to sense the painful reality that perhaps my life was not going to be exactly what I had hoped it would as a young man...caught up in the emotional vortex of alcoholism and sex addiction.

When I finally saw Before Midnight, I was many years past the recognition that my life simply wasn't what it was meant to be, and time had indeed had its fancy with young Ray Jackson. He was yet another in a long series of lovers left adrift in the bitter reality of broken dreams.

So I stood there in the aisles of the Noble and realized that I have not simply experienced this trilogy as a passive viewer...rather, in my inscrutable way...I have lived it. And thus I cannot bear to live with it as a collection of memories on my bookshelf.

A man comes to a point in his life when he realizes that memories are no longer bittersweet.

...they are the thorns of experience upon which the defeated fall and bleed.

Just finished watching the first two movies in this great set. But I may have found a QC issue. Has anyone noticed black blobs behind Jesse and Celine during the scene in Before Sunset where they are getting up from the park bench? It starts at around the 42:28 mark on the bird feeder behind Celine and continues through the trees as they walk away. To my eyes it looks like something wasn't turned off of the noise management software prior to the encode.

I do see what you're talking about, but it's so minor that I can't imagine a recall for it. Never would have spotted it had you not pointed it out.

Out of curiosity, did Warner allow Criterion to preserve the original Columbia Pictures logo on Before Sunrise? Since I also see Sony Pictures Classics for Before Midnight, they may have been like oh, what the hell!

Before Sunrise begins immediately with the Criterion logo and then segues into the Castle Rock logo.

No Annette Bnning to be seen.

I wish I could find a clip of the original opening online. Obviously I can imagine what it would have been like with the Columbia logo but it would be cool to see.
