Default PS3 won't play Blu-ray movies???

I was in my home town in Vt. recently and noticed they have started stocking SOME movies on blu-ray at the video rental store. As I had just purchased a 1080P LCD screen for my parents house I was interested.

I talking to them they mentioned they had a lot of returns from ppl w/ ps3's sayoi ng they would not playback on the PS3.

I assume ppl were trying to scam refunds o their blu-ray movie rentals, the discs were definitely Blu-ray. Or maybe ppl had PS2's.

I am considering getting a sale Samsung BD1500 vs. an eBay PS3...so want be certain the PS3 has no issues at all with rental BD movies....

Anyone heard of this????

Why? Other than the fact the PS3 is a game machine, the reviews I've read rate the BD1500 somewhat better PQ than the PS3 and it's much cheaper....sales this week <$

The only reason a movie might not play on a PS3 is because the firmware isn't up to date. That would be the same case scenario for any Blu Ray player though. you have to make sure the firmware is up to date no matter which player you choose.

well.. becasue it is a gaming machine on top of everything it can do (store music, photos, video, surf the net, etc) it's the perfect entertainment center, super fast BD load times, easiest to upgrade and the picture is flawless IMO. If your not into any of those things, then perhaps a standalone is what you are more suited for.

I myself will probably buy a standalone soon to take some of the wear off my PS3 because up to now I have used it to do everything including BD's, DVD's, Gaming, Net Surfing etc. But for $400 bucks your getting way more bang for your buck than any old standalone could ever give you. IMO....
