Default Sony Blu-ray writer will not play movies

Wow, - how insane does it get?

Well, - at least it looks like it going to play them ... eventually

The first Blu-ray (BD) disc drive for desktop PCs is here, but be warned -- it won't play commercial BD movies.

Bautista is optimistic that both issues will be resolved "soon", and says that despite not being able to play commercial content, the drive is still useful as a "storage device", particularly for those looking to create and distribute their own high-definition home movies on BD-R and BD-RE discs.

This is untrue. If you have the needed software you can play movies. It reads DATA it can READ the disc.

My DVD player also can not play DVDs, but VLC player and Windows Media Player CAN~!

I don't think anyone had expectations that the drives would play the movies without the required software and hardware in place.

You can rip the IDE drive out of the Toshiba HD DVD player and put it in a PC. If you do that you can't watch movies on it.

In neither case is the drive the limitation - it is the PC you put it in that cannot play the movies.

Ok. That was the little specific detail that was missing from your previous post.

According to Sony, it will work with commercial movies if you have an HDCP supported video card..

That's good news... If I spend $750 dollars on a BD drive, I would expect it to play movies as a minimum expectation. I think that the companies put way too much emphasis on HDCP compliancy. How many devices are out there that can record from a VGA output or a component output. I'm sure they are out there, but they sure aren't widespread enough to pose a major piracy problem at this point.

I am sure you can play movies that are not content protected. If you get the software...

The software that's bundle with the drive should play unprotected movies just fine, it's the protected 'commercial' movies that's everyone is having trouble with...

It is because your PC is not secure. It is really quite simple.

It is not a limitation of the drive, rather the rest of the system.

it should play movies fine over the rgb connection but depending on your monitor and videocard it might have some severe problems playing over dvi.
