Default PAL format and region coding help!

Ok so amazon uk has certain blu rays that we don't (USA) so when you look at the product details it says on some them PAL format, and all regions. So will that work on my sony bdp-s300 US player?

Amazon Data entry monkeys are used to doing DVDs. They have a form they fill out with checkboxes

There is only 1 HD video format. You're fine

Cool! What about the region codes has to be region 1 or all regions right?

You have two issues. First, your BD player (or DVD player) must be able to handle decoding the PAL signal format. Second, your HDTV must also be capable of displaying a PAL signal once decoded by the player.

The format in USA and North America is NTSC.

No. I don't think the S300's sold in USA or North America will decode PAL.

Actually your third issue is Region encoding. If your BD is not Region A/1 (North America)...then NO...it will not play in your USA purchased S300. If the BD is "Region Free"...then YES...it will play in your S300. But not if it's also PAL.

Make sense?

Maybe someone else has better info as I have not tried the PAL thing myself. But I'm also used to this problem more so on DVD. So I'm speaking from that perspective.

well there is no PAL in HD. As long as the disc is all region it will play on USA machines.

So for BD pal is a non issue, for DVD pal is an issue.

All movies are stored at 1080p24.

PAL may be a non-issue for the feature and any high-def supplements but presumably supplements such as trailers and featurettes that are not in high-def will still be encoded in PAL on European discs.

Not sure, my usa imported panasonic player seems to play everything so far, it hasnt not played any content back. (as long as its all region discs)

perhaps the players just outputs everything at 1080p60, so the conversion is done in the player?

There is PAL in HD, I don't know where people got that idea. Obviously the resolution is the same but the frame rates aren't. 1080i 50 / 1080p 25 still has to be called PAL since those frame rates can't be viewed on US televisions.

well thats true, but has any content been released in 25P.

the BD players should however be able to convert 1080p50>1080p60.

from what ive seen the Euro countries are releasing in 24p as well.(?)

its odd as all euro HDTVs will display 50/60 with no problems, why cant the USA models?

So really it is just better to wait till it comes to the US? Would hate to import a movie spend 30$ to get it here then not have it work.

I'm farily certain that any HD camcorder sold in Europe will record at 25 frames per PAL spec. When you put that disk in the player, that player will need to decode a PAL signal.

Maybe all HD movies are at 24 making it a non-issue.

So let's be careful saying "there is no PAL in HD". Too generic.

No, PAL is 50i/625 line 576 x 702 (576 x 720 digital). So 1080/50i is not PAL, it's 1080/50i

I think Josh mentioned that the Italian Memoirs of a Geisha was in 50i?

In PAL countries, I assume the BD Players (and the HDTVs) sold there, have PAL and 1080/50i capabilities added. I would not assume that for US players

If its all region title it will play in all regions, no point being all region otherwise.

I expect a USA player will just output at either 1080p24 for the movie (or 1080p60) and 1080p60 for the features.

i own a USA player and have had no playback issues with all region discs.

Most BD movies will be in 1080/24p. Most "Live" camera productions will be in 1080/60i. I would guess there will be European and Australian "Live" camera productions that might be in 1080/50i and be released in Region B at their native rate.

Warner's BBC Planet Earth disc from Region A is in 1080/24p even though the PAL DVDs and BBC HD broadcasts are in 50Hz rates. Maybe the Region B release will be in in 50Hz rates too. Maybe the Discovery version might be encoded at a 60Hz rate? (haven't watched that on TV)

(and btw all DVDs are anamorphic while BDs HD content is NOT)

Quick question, is the U.K. crimson tide blu-ray edited differently to the U.S. dvd version? I'm thinking of importing this one.

Thanks.
