Default Panasonic 800U THX mode

Hi,

I am assuming THX mode is a picture mode on 800U, can some one post the contrast, brightness, sharpness, color levels etc for THX mode?

I have a 50" 85U and would like to set these setting in custom picture mode.

Thanks in advance.

um...the 85u does not have THX settings.

Using someones settings for the 800u would not benefit you. A professional calibration would be your best bet.

By the way, how do you like the 85u, I have a 46" 85u coming soon.

the THX mode on the 800 is just a "pre-calibrated" movie preset to give you more of a movie theater type picture (warmer color, lower brightness, and so on). The same settings would not work on the pz85 because it has a different panel - the 85's panel is darker which gives you better black levels than the 800 or the 850 so the same settings that they use for the THX mode won't give you the same picture on your TV. Just get your TV calibrated professionally and it will look better than the 800 with the THX mode (calibrating the TV in your own home is a huge advantage over a pre-calibrated set at a factory).

man, I thought the 800/850u were as close to perfect out of the box?!! So the reviews have stated.

...did you notice any significant adjustments?

I like my 50" 85U no problems but only thing i am thinking was about 24p and THX mode that it doesnt have and 800u does. 800U is $400 to $500 expensiver than 85U, not sure if its worth spending that extra cash for thx and 24p.

maybe the THX but I don't think for 24fps.

But if you get it professionaly calibrated...it would be pretty darn close to THX if not identical/better.

But make sure youve broken it in for a long while before professionally calibrating it.

I have an 50" 800u coming next week. I got a killer deal on the 800u and BD35 combo. They came VERY close to the Panasonic Purchase Program they have with some companies. Since I qualify for the EPP pricing through my job, I took the price in and asked if they would match it. They came within $100 so I felt that it was worth staying with a local company, especially in today's economy. I would hate for them to go under. Just doing my part to save the little guys.

BTW, I chose the 800u over the 85u because of the 24p and various reviews and forum discussions. I also though it looked better in the store. Not a THX fanboy so that was not too important.

I heard that you can calibrate it right out of the box since there is no break-on per se.

I think you've heard incorrectly. You should always put several hundred hours on your set before you get it professionally calibrated. It is also a good idea to break-in a new plasma for the first 100-200 hours using either the break-in DVD or by keeping it on full screen with content that does not contain static images (and picture settings all at <50%). This will help minimize the chances/severity of IR later on.

Does the TV come with the DVD? So the break-in would be roughly a month? Problem is that one of the reasons why I'm getting this plasma is because of gaming so that's one of the first things I'm gona do...

No, you'll need to burn the DVD yourself. See the following thread on AVS that describes the process.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=583089

And the DVD can be obtained from here:

http://www.eaprogramming.com/

Pop it in your player, set it to loop and play it for a week. Break-in done!

Thanks! Should I just keep the TV turned on with this as long as possible?
So if I would play a videogame with a HUD and pause it every 30min to let the HUD disappear for a few seconds would that prevent burn in?

i own the Panasonic TH-50PZ800U and i don't use the THX preset picture mode because i feel it looks very dim, washed out, and lacks detail. It does look more "film-like" but i'm not a traditionalist who believes home theater should look identical to the theatical experience. I think if i were to use the THX mode and i were to have guests over to watch TV or movie, the first thing they would say is, "what's wrong with your TV? It looks like crap".

here's THX picture settings:

picture +55
brightness +52
color +50
tint 0
sharpness +50
color temp warm
all other pic settings OFF

DISCLAIMER: in the following pics the monkey's face is more red on my camera than it is on my TV.

first 2 pics are with THX ON

last pic is in Custom Mode

Actually, a local Maryland ISF calibrator over at AVS told me that the new Pannys can be calibrated as soon as they get taken out of the box. No need for break in any longer. The dealer I bought my TV from said the same.

Not sure what I will do.
