Default Best Budget 7.1 Set Up

I want to upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1 surround sound. It really doesn't matter if my receiver is THX certified or not. I'm leaning towards the Yamaha RX-V663BL. Or the Onkyo TX-SR606. And I'll upgrade my speakers at a later time.

I guess these are my questions:
1. Which do you prefer? The Yamaha or Onkyo receiver?
2. Can I simply use my RCA 5.1 speakers for now?
3. Do you need certain speakers to output HD Audio? Or is it just speaker quality?
4. What is a good speaker set/bundle to purchase?

Thanks for your help!!!

Luc

Look at THIS thread I made. This review basically sold me on the Onkyo.
Regarding the HD-Audio it depends more on the combined quality of the speaker and receiver.

Budget?

I prefer Onkyo's for extra power at louder levels and user friendly setup and manuals.

2. Can I simply use my RCA 5.1 speakers for now?

What ohm rating are they?

3. Do you need certain speakers to output HD Audio? Or is it just speaker quality?

It would be ideal to upgrade your speakers, but no, you don't have to have certain speakers to get HD audio; Speaker quality is a huge factor there.

4. What is a good speaker set/bundle to purchase?

Onkyo 606/ Polk RM6750 (See my sig and thread)

Thanks for your help!!!

No problem!

I am sure you can get a nice setup very cheap.

I got my 7.1 for about 1000$ CDN total.

I got the 888 Denon for $300, got my infinity set for $300 and then got my PSB Alpha B1 Monitor for $300.

The Denon does not do DD EX or DTS-MA but it does do lossless and direct sound(which is better in my opinion).

I never been so happy with my "inexpensive" audio purchases. I can watch movies over and over now because of the sound.
