Default HD DVD fanboys... why?

What keeps them buying hd dvd's and trying to get new people to buy it as well? All I see on hd digest is them saying blu-ray is going to fail and blu-ray will survive. The latest thing I read is how blu-ray is going to die after ces:2k8 because evidentally hd dvd has a secret weapon none of us are aware of? I just dont understand them at all? Thoughts, comments?

I think most people that bought into HD-DVD now have made such a commitment (money spent, movies bought) that it is hard for them to admit they made the wrong choice. In reality, it's not over yet, and they still want to believe they made the right choice. The more people they convince, the better they feel.

Just my take on the situation

I've wondered this many times as well. I myself couldn't rationalize rooting for a format that has documented proof that the quality of releases is lower, with less room for future use. Why introduce something that's already maxed out in it's capabilities, and furthermore, why choose a format with low to no growth potential over something with more growth potential and more present value? It's like buying a car with 80 horsepower that also only gets 9 mpg. Where's the positive trade off??

Exactly, but yet they continue to say blu-ray is going to lose, which of course is a very big statement to make especially since the numbers show differently, but also crap being released from warner is helping out with this either. I just dont get it at all, I havent questioned being blu-ray, but if I was just hd dvd I would be freaked about my format dying, yet they dont show it bothering them one bit.

I think you're right. There seem to be a few level-headed people over there (ack_bak and kid_banana come to mind), and some that despite supporting HD DVD are realistic enough to see the writing on the wall.

I think the more rabid fanboys are blissfully ignorant of the facts. They hate Sony for some reason, and they equate Blu-ray with Sony, therefore Blu-ray just be the devil incarnate. The fact that the BDA consists of rather more members than just Sony seems to escape them! If you don't like Sony, there are plenty of other HW manufacturers to chose from: Philips, Samsung, Pioneer, Panasonic, with more coming sooner or later (e.g., Sharp).

I've considered joining up over there, just to participate in the discussions, but the juvenile inability of many people over there to have meaningful debates has prevented me from doing so. I've got no problem with debating the relative pros and cons of each format, provided that debate is kept civil and sticks to the facts (or at least to reasonable extrapolations therefrom).

The worst of the bunch of those guys that assert that if HD DVD loses, they would rather all optical media die than Blu-ray win. How sensible is that?! *Shrug*

That's my take as well. I'm not sure how many of them are actually still sinking money in HD DVD, but they seem to be hysterically intent on trying to bring more people onboard. I suppose it makes them feel less stupid if there are more people with them when the ship finally sinks.

whatever

Scorched-earth thinking. Just like Toshiba.

It's all very petty and childish.

I can understand hd-dvd guys being bent out of shape over losing their investment, but damn, to say with a straight face that bd will die after CES 2008 and actually believe it takes a massive leap of faith.

Back in the late early days of the net on forum sites there was always a surefire ways to find out who was an expert at technology and who was just a simpleton. Not 100% of the time or even 90% of the time but at least a majority of the time it was true. That being if they had an aol.com email address it usually meant you could write off the person's opinion.

Today it seems as if the person has HD DVD and defends it you're certain to see a massive amount of stupidity.

the term is sour grapes. I think there are several reasons

1) the longer HD DVD survives the longer they can wait until they buy a real player.

2) the longer HD DVD lasts the more they can pretend they did not do something stupid

3) if you con enough people

-- a) maybe dual players will become the norm and then we all need to pay much more

-- b) and dual players will become the norm maybe studios will become stupid and release on HD DVD

You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.

One would think the HD DUD "evil axis" (Microsoft, Toshiba, Universal) would have enough sense to listen to ol' Abe Lincoln...

They say that now but they will come around. When all PC drives and CE players are BD, there is no way to avoid it anyways. What are they gonna do, not use optical drives?

Their "righteous" stand will dissolve in time...

I'd rather support the 'evil' Sony than those three. Love the Avatar, WM!!

I still pick up HD-DVDs, in cases where I find a good deal (found The Fountain and Letters From Iwo Jima for $14.95 a pop used this weekend) or when there is an exclusive that I really want (Casino, Deer Hunter, Children of Men, Army of Darkness, The Thing, etc). I fully expect Blu to win, and welcome it due to the technical advantages, but at this point, I've invested enough in HD, I'm not gonna drop it. I'm already planning on picking up an HD-A20 once HD-DVD is officially dead (and thus cheap) to replace my molasses HD-A1.

I'm neutral and buy on both formats. I prefer more titles on HD DVd than BD plus the BD spec isn't up to par with HD DVD yet. While I don't look at the extra features some HD DVD titles have right away. They do add an enjoyable element to watching the movie. BD doesn't have this yet. But even if I'm considered an HD DVD fanboy. I've still purchased more BD titles than most people on this forum.
