Default The Third Man Blu-ray Review

Not sure how many people are excited about this Criterion Blu-ray release, but they should be. Just read a fantastic review by Dr. Steve A., and I am hyped up about this one. Things just keep getting better in the Blu universe. Check out the great review https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movie...95&show=review

ive heard this is an incredible movie.....and what's interesting is that criterion's blurays dont seem to be that much higher priced than normal blurays. i recall many of their dvds being twice the price of a regular dvd (although that did sometimes vary depending on the title)

I am getting three from their original Blu-ray release. The Third Man, Ran, and The Man who fell to Earth. Would like countless others from Criterion, so I will do my share in supporting the cause.

Did they announce Ran?

not to deviate from the thread topic, but just as a sidenote can you imagine how incredible "days of heaven" criterion would look on bluray........

Yes, we are all very excited about these upcoming Criterion blu-rays... and we usually comment about them over in the "Criterion sets five titles" thread. It's up to 13 pages of posts currently.

2 threads cant hurt. I can only handle so many Transformers and TDK threads anyway.

lets be honest, 1 thread for them now is a great idea. but once they start coming out you're likely to see 100+ threads probably all asking the exact same question in various wordings about each criterion movie

but for now, we should probably continue to only talk about the third man here. don't want to take over anyone's thread

has anyone here seen third man before and recommends the purchase?

Its a great film that is truly worthy of the moniker "classic". Definite purchase for me.

Yes, I completely agree with you. I'd love to see some "intellectual" conversations about these Criterion blu-ray releases.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love TDK, but Criterion releasing titles is like a wet dream for me.

Whatever happened to the 400 blows BD? I know it was listed as a first wave release initially and now I can't find it at all.

Well, not to continue threadcapping this thread about the wonderful "The Third Man" blu-ray, but below is the original list of films that Criterion listed for their first wave for release.

The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear

I've seen this movie many, many times. I pull it out at least once a year and it gets better with each viewing. The main character is playing detective and we get all the clues that he does, though it's not forced upon us. When you see the movie the second time through you'll see how detailed all the other characters are and the clues that were missed.

In addition the setting is wonderful. A bombed out city that is occupied by four different nations is very timely. Crime is rampant and the characters freely admit they've comited some minor crime somewhere, from selling something on the black market to having forged IDs. The famous climax takes place in the sewers- so appropriate for the movie!

Both this and 'Casablanca' are no-brainer buys for me, with 'The Third Man' being the better of the two.

As a side note, Peter Jackson makes many references to this film in his wonderful film 'Heavenly Creatures'. A suggest both, with 'The Third Man' being watched first. Hopefully, 'The Lord of the Rings' will get people interested in Jackson's work, and his work will get people interested in 'The Third Man'. That would be great.
