Default Universal Remotes

I currently have a Harmony 880 Universal Remote for my home theater setup, however it does not work with my PS3 because it uses IR instead of Blue Tooth. I have been doing some research lately and have come across a couple different options so that I can use my universal remote to control the PS3. The option that seems best is a piece of equipment that you hook up to the PS3 called PS3toothfairy. Has anyone heard of these? Does anyone have one? Also if you do have one have you had any problems with it? Just trying to get all the info I can before I go and spend $100 for it.

Thanks

I haven't heard of this method. What I have heard of is the IR2BT which is out there at around $50. If you're willing to give up turning the PS3 on via IR, you can buy a Nyko Blu wave remote and use the dongle with the Harmony. Only costs $15.

Yeah according to ps3toothfairy.com I would be able to turn the PS3 on and off with the universal remote.

The PS3 added a turn off button to the dashboard, and you have walk up to the PS3 to put a movie in anyway right? $85 is some serious cash to be able to turn the thing on.... IMO.

If you get the ps3toothfairy, let us know how it works.

Go with the Blu Wave. It works great with Harmony remotes. Paying anything more is just a waste of $$.

I have the Nyko Blu Wave and it works great. The Blu Wave dongle is on the end of a USB cable out of sight but able to pick up IR. I cannot turn on the PS3 with the remote, but as mentioned, I have to visit the PS3 to install the disc anyway. I can adjust the volume of the sound system, control the movie, eject the disc and turn off the PS3 with the remote.

I would like to see a bluetooth remote with a programmable IR repeater module like the MWave IR repeater by Harmony.

bluwave works great, you just have to have the ps3 on for it to work ( no power for ps3, no power for the usb dongle)

I have the IR2BT and love it. Works flawlessly with my Harmony One remote.

And no, I don't always have to walk up to it and put in a disc. Many times, especially now that I have a stand alone BD player, I keep the same game disc in to play. So a quick press of the 'Play PS3' button on my remote wkaes up the PS3, turns on my tellie, turns on my receiver, and gets me ready to play some FIFA 09 (or Lego Batman/Star Wars for my boys).

I agree 100%. I have the Bluwave dongle and it works great. For all that my harmony remote does I think I can turn on the PS3 when I need to. Besisdes for 15$ and 20 minutes of getting the harmony settings the way I wanted it it was worth a try.

I have the Harmony One and the Blue Wave remote and it works great, never had a problem with it. I wish Sony would keep power to the USB ports when it is in standby mode so you could use the remote to turn it on. The Wii keeps power to it's USB ports as long as you have Wii Connect 24 turned on, Sony should take a page from their book.

What will it take for this to be the last thread on this subject? There are only 5465465 others. Sheesh.

What will it take? A sticky?

I've been using my Harmony 720 with the Nyko since it came out. Works great and hard to justify spending $80-100 more for the ability to turn it on (especially since I need to put a disc in anyway, be it game or movie).

PS3 with built-in IR capability. Until then, we'll just continue to answer questions

I was looking at the 550 today ($99) - can you set it up to do the Pop up menu?

Surprised Logitech haven't brought out a Bluetooth enabled Harmony yet.

Do these things break easily?

I was looking at threads talking about the 880's breaking after a year or two (almost all starting with the volume up button).

Also, can you get the pop up menu on Blu-rays?

I have a 670 and no issues, had it for a year (knock on wood). With the blu wave and harmony you can control the pop-up menu as well as the Main menu with separate buttons.
