I am helping a friend put together a home theatre. 100" Screen, Epson Projector, etc. Big room. I am trying to decide on a player for him and was going to go with the Sony 550, but I was looking at receivers on 6th Ave. Electronics with the 25% off coupon code. They have some Denon bundles (which was the receiver I was going with 2309) that included their blu-ray players. Usually I wouldn't pay up for the Denon, but with the 25% off the bundle I'm thinking about it...What are your thoughts on the Denon players versus the Sony?

As far as Denon DVD players, I have had the DVD 3910 which I sold for the top of the line DVD 5910 as well as their Blu-ray DVD 3800BDCi. My 5910 and 3800 BDCI I like very very much. But these units have been upgraded by Dave Schulte of the Upgrade Company:
http://upgradecompany.com/ I have been quite impressed with Denon's higher priced DVD and Blu-ray players as well as their mid priced DVD players. Rich |

It depends really. If you get a new receiver or PRE/PRO with DAC's that are comparable to the 3800BDCI, there is no reason to get a player with 7.1 analog output, anyway. I use the multichannel analog output from the 3800, because the sound is much nicer than using my Sony AVR for that purpose. I lose the ability to use PLIIx or other matrixing features of the AVR, but that's fine. The Denon is probably also a better DVD upconverter than the Sony.

I have the 2309CI and you won't be disappointed. Excellent receiver with great sound and power, the only downside is setting it up. While not overly difficult, if you don't use the manual when configuring you'll probably never figure it out on your own. A big bonus I have found with the receiver is that it is relatively small and runs fairly cool. I have it in a small enclosure with little airflow and it never gets hot. As far as the players go, I have never owned a Denon player so I can't comment on the two you are trying to decide upon. The price for either of those bundles is very good though.

I'm really only worried about the decoding abilities of the players and the fact that neither seem to be 2.0 out of the box. Does anyone know if that's upgradable? Or should I be concerned about that?
Thanks for the input so far...big help! |
