Default PS3 question

I am concerned about the type of picture quality the PS3 will produce for Blu-ray movies. I have read that will now include HDMI 1.3 which should help drastically. I was thinking of getting either the Sony or Pioneer players when they come out but then today I started thinking about getting the PS3 since it already has the BD drive in it. So my question is then, will the PS3 put out as good of a picture as the Sony Blu-Ray player? Thanks for your opinions in advance.

That's the $600 question. No ones knows yet unfortunately. You can speculate that it can't be as good as the standalone player because a) the PS2 comparably wasn't a great DVD player and b) who would buy the standalone if you can get a PS3 for $400 cheaper? However you can also say that it should be a great BR player simply because the Cell processor was designed for this kind of stuff.

Of course there's also the issue of if the PS3 has a decent player interface and/or if it has an IR receiver for remotes (hopefully it should but I haven't seen any confirmation).

Bottom line: Outlook unclear. Ask again later.

Sorry, personal pet peeve of mine.

The PS2 DVD player was highly comparible to other DVD players that were available at the time that PS2 was released. It wasn't like a really good DVD player, but it wasn't like the cheapest ones either. It was 'middle of the road'. Now, a couple years later and it looks cheap and lousy, but that doesn't change that when it was released it truly did provide an image that was in line with other DVD players of the time.

If PS3 is 'marginal' then that will be enough to get me through a year or two until the format war is over or universal players come out. I have no belief at all that Blu-ray will fail, but both formats could survive.

MY OPINION: PS3 will be exceptional. The hardware inside the PS3 is exactly the type that Blu-ray needs to look good. While the user interface may end up being poor, that is something I can definitely live with for a year or two. But, the image quality should be stunning.

I'm kind of assuming that, like the PS2, the PS3 pad will act as a controller for movies, but hopefully we will get a simple remote for BD movies - though I suspect it will be bluetooth not infra red, this is good though because you won't need line of sight.

I too am expecting the PS3 to be a showcase for BD movie playback, it has to really because it will be most people's first dip into HD movies, if it looks poor or no better than DVD, then people won't bother.

Does anyone know for sure whether the PS3 upscales DVD?

More or less what I said. It was OK, not great... but point taken.

They could always go that route but I hope not because then it won't work with universal remotes.

As to whether it will upconvert DVDs I believe it will but have no source at the moment.

i don't have a source other than what i've heard on this board, but i seem to recall a lot of people throwing around the idea that the ps3 is pretty much designed to upconvert everything. dvd, ps2, psx.

as far as remotes are concerned, i'm actually thinking that with wireless controllers i'm going to care a lot less about whether or not there is a remote.

so the shape is kinda funny for a remote, and i might not have quite as many buttons. meh. i can live with that.

personally, i prefer the sort of virtual buttons the ps2 brought up onscreen. it means i'm not trying to read what some tiny button's second function does while i'm attempting to not miss whatever is still going on in the film.

basically, score one more for ps3 in my books.
