Default PS3 not reading discs

My PS3 was working fine until about an hour into Jumper (yeah, crappy movie I know). The movie played fine and then suddenly froze. I couldn't go back to the disc menu, so I ejected the disc and tried again. System wouldn't read the disc. I turned off the system and turned it back on to try again. Disc worked for about five minutes and then froze again. I put in Wall-E and MGS4 and both were not readable. Jumper worked fine on my Samsung 1500p. I have a 40GB model. I updated to the latest firmware, 2.53.

Did my system just crap out? This really sucks because I haven't owned it for a year and have watched less than 100 Blu-rays on it. Played a handful of games...no dvds or cds ever played it in. System is on a shelf, elevated about 3 feet off the ground. Is there some way to open it up and use compressed air to clean it? I'm thinking the lense may be dirty (dust I imagine).

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Id say if the games are playing fine in it still just the lazer is bad. If not Then you may want to replace the whole drive itself. Just my thoughts as well.

Check out my thread and see if you had similar symptoms.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=70948

I'm not advising you to replace your laser, but I just want to let you know what was happening with me when my laser died and what I did to repair it. My system was out of 1 year warranty at the time.

Sounds like what my 60GB did to me one month before the warranty was over. I sent mine back to sony and had it back in a week's time, with a new BD drive installed. You go through the steps on sony's webpage, they send you a box, you pack it, ship it, then it comes back good as new. You should copy your hard drive over to something, though. Otherwise you'll lose everything. If you have any game save data, copy that too.

Not a solution for you but my own sorry tale with a happy ending...sort of.

What you describe happened to me with every single firmware before 2.52 with 2.50 being the absolute worst. Nothing would last more than 5 mins.
I was just too lazy to bring the PS3 back to Sony.

Now with 2.52 - that's my miracle firmware - games and movies play hours on end without a single freeze.

1. May not be the drive - could be the device driver. It's amazing how these different firmware so drastically and unpredictably (good for some people, train wreck for others) alter the drive's behaviour as reading BDs should be the lowest hanging fruit of all.

2. But I feel for you, and am loathe to upgrade to 2.53.

They replaced my 60gb entirely when I sent mine in. I lost all of my data. I had things backed up and when I went to reinstall/restore, it told me that it couldn't restore to a different PS3. I wish it was only the drive that they exchanged. The fans on my new PS3 are very loud as well.

Marine Mike-thanks for the info

moose4130-do you happen to have the link so I can initiate that process? Where there any repair fees?

mustang7071-I believe i was on 2.52, but upgraded to 2.53 after it didn't read the discs.

Bts I purchased this on December 8th 2007 from Amazon. Almost a year.

Default Don't Send it in for Repair Just Yet

If the system is not loading a disc properly that doesn't necessarily mean there is a hardware problem. The system likely does other things while loading movies/games that require reading/writing of system files.

Before you send it in for repair, try a couple options from the Recovery Menu (assuming you have at least firmware v2.50, if not, upgrade to the latest firmware first). With the system on standby (red light), hold the power button until the third beep. The system will shut off again, then hold the power button again and you will get one beep followed by 3 fast beeps. You will then be prompted to connect the controller via USB and press the PS button (or maybe 'X', I don't remember).

Then you will see the recovery menu with 6 options:
  1. Restart System
  2. Restore Default Settings
  3. Rebuild Database
  4. Restore File System
  5. Restore PS3 System
  6. System Upgrade

Try options 2, 3 and 4, restarting the system after each option. If none of those options work, backup all your important data using the Backup Utility and then choose option 5 (Restore PS3 System). WARNING! I say to backup because choosing this option will erase everything on the hard drive!

If after all that your system still doesn't work, then call Sony.

Hi. Thanks for your help. After trying an option, how do you restart the system without turning it off and going through the beeping steps?

I have a similar story. Except mine appears to be just one movie (American Psycho) I hope anyway. It loads gets as far as the disclaimer for the audio commentary/ interviews, then .....nothing. I thought maybe it was a problem with LGF movies so I tried out Rambo and Bank Job and they played fine. I think I'll leave it at the moment as it appears to be just one movie.

Thats exactly how my problem started, wouldnt read just one disc. Then after a couple of weeks wouldn't read any discs. Yes out of warranty, having laser assembly replaced right now.

I haven't ever needed to do this myself, but I believe you can select option #1 (Restart System) after you try one of the other options. Also, doing this might reset your video settings so you might need the old composite multi-out cables to get a picture.

I feel your pain last night during Prince Caspian mine did the same damn thing I tried all the resets and what not and still nothing plays for longer than a few minutes. Then it locks up. Already filled out the crap on the sony website. So now I just got to wait to get it back. I might go out and buy another blu ray player just so I can watch the Dark knight and the rest of prince caspian. It messed up right where King Peter was getting ready to dual the bad king

Happened to me a few months back. Call Sony and have the ship out a 'coffin' for your PS3.(Box to send it to them in) Took about a week for me to get mine back with a new blu-ray drive. Hopefully you're under the one year warranty and it'll all be free of charge.

Options 2, 3, 4 didn't work for me.

Got my coffin in yesterday. Good thing I live in Texas. Probably going to ship it out tomorrow.
