I mean I agree, I'd love everything on UHD at this point. I'm just saying catalog releases have struggled with sales on BD, let alone UHD. The market is what it is, and I don't think catalog UHD is anyone's priority really. They're probably going to trickle out during cross-promotions and anniversaries for a while, before labels maybe jump in and try their hand at it. Niche stuff is niche, you know? I just bought a movie on DVD the other day, Stakeout, because I doubt Disney ever plans to release it on BD, let alone UHD. That's the market we're in.

Also 4k scans definitely show benefits on BD, plus they then have it prepared for a UHD release someday if it makes sense. So I don't agree with your latter point at all really.

I don't have a problem with studio/labels sticking with regular blu rays, unless they do end up re-releasing them on UHD later, that's why I'm trying to avoid 4k remasters of regular blu rays. I think releasing Goodfellas 25th anniversary, The Fifth Element, Leon, Dracula (and soon The Wrath of Khan) on UHD, a year or so after we bought the remasters is a straight up middle finger

Maybe based on past performance, they don't think they will recoup the investment to justify a UHD release, besides this will probably end up as bargain bin fodder.

They do show benefits, sure--I'm positive this release will absolutely slay the current MGM release--but by definition, a 4K source being downgraded to 1080p is a failure to show the 4K source to its fullest capability. Not sure how that can be disagreed with--it's numbers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I can recall they didn't remaster Matinee at all but used the existing HD transfer supplied by Universal.

This was LONG overdue. I never bought the old release as the reviews were pretty awful. Delighted to hear that it has received a 4k restoration.
Would be perfect if an optional 5.1 mix were included as well, but it sounds like a terrific release. Can't wait. My mum's favourite film.

Well you said "they should do not bother and do 2k scans" when I said that.

Fair point, but I doubt there would be an appreciable difference between a 2K and 4K scan (assuming both were done with care) on a 1080p disc, so in that regard, if Arrow won't go UHD, seems they could have saved a pretty penny or two going 2K with their remaster and we'd still end up with a dynamite Blu-ray (not that that's my preferred end game--I'm looking for UHD everything, not to cap out at 2K). I just don't understand the idea of having cavier and only serving it on a Ritz cracker.

Someone quoted in the Suspiria thread IIRC said that getting into UHD production costs tens of thousands of dollars right now, so I think Arrow would rather put their limited resources into restoring stuff in 4K and having that stuff on tap to be exploited in the future.

Sure, it's frustrating for us 4K nuts to not have a UHD version but after watching Arrow's stunning restorations of Donnie Darko and TLADILA - backed up by peerless encodes from David M - then I don't feel particularly short-changed right now.

And that's all this is. Not anger, not Arrow hate, certainly not a refusal to buy their products. Just frustration. I'm sure UHDs of their work over the last year would bring me to tears.

The sole reason behind these restorations isn't just a home media release. These 4K restorations will also do the rep circuit for years. Seeing them projected at a cinema will make quite a big difference in viewing a 2K vs 4K screening.

Good point, Arrow can make a few bob from loaning those out which is of course what Shout said when asked why they don't do 4K for everything they release: if they don't control the rights across varying forms of media then it's not worth their time & money to go overboard with a new remaster. One wonders then how many more rights Arrow will have to The Thing when their 4K remaster finally surfaces, or perhaps they're just as limited as Shout's rights and Arrow just wanted to one-up them.

With all due respect to the artist, that cover is a miss.

I'll have to go back and watch the one I have and wait and see the reviews on this one before I double dip. Great movie though!

Bought a Universal 4 film pack on DVD which had Fierce Creatures in anamorphic widescreen for the first time here in America. Not a bad job but will buy FC, but will grab AFCW day one!!

Gonna get flipped anyway like pretty much every other Arrow release. Original poster art FTW.

Certainly want to get this one but the price seems rather high. Haven't paid more than $20 in quite some time.
