People always seem to think once X becomes popular Y no longer exists. Going to be dealing with reactions like "they still make discs?" as streaming gets more dominant. Most people don't think about or want to be in niche audiences. People want to be in the popular zeitgeist.

VHS went extinct when DVD came.. Who's to say the same fate awaits DVD and later ob bluray, leaving us in a world of 2160p exclusively?

Except even VHS staggered on for about 7-8 years after DVD launched. The last VHS player was made in 2016, a quick google reveals.

To answer your question 1080p content will disappear. Although DVD first appeared in 1995 that's 22 years. Blu-ray first appeared in 2006 if you added the 22 DVD's have been around that's 2028.
You have to specify which delivery mechanism. Over the Air Antenna TV which still doesn't have anything greater than 1080i will be primarily 720P and 1080P + HDR with ATSC 3.0 after 2018 - 2023. ATSC 3.0 will be offering 3D in the 2020's.

UHD Blu-ray with digital bridge will have 1080P via HDMI and streaming in the home with HD Blu-ray players eventually phased out. UHD Blu-ray will be offering 3D via depthmap in the early 2020's.

Cable TV will support UHD (IPTV) at a premium with HD (1080P and 720P) the common standard. Currently OTA TV and Cable have resolutions much below 1080P.

Sony is or was releasing a line of 1080P + HDR TVs and eventually every TV will be a UHD TV; the 1080P + HDR are called UHD Capable.

Will 1080p ever disappear? They are already phasing out 1080p tv's but I dont think 1080p video is going anywhere anytime soon. Blu ray was supposed to replace dvd but that has yet to happen and I dont believe 4K Blu ray will replace regular 1080p Blu ray. You will have 3 formats to choose from for the forseeable future including streaming if thats you kind of thing.

Most tv ads these days hardly promote HD TVs they promote 4K TVs. I don't even remember a new add or promotion bragging about the incredible HD 1080p quality of a particular tv set

DVD is awful but some move lovers either can't afford even the best HD setups and they'll settle for upscaling from 480p. Others just don't freaking care lol. We are niche consumers. Albeit there's enough of us to keep physical media alive and enough of us to drive the innovation of the manufacturers to make the new technology affordable.

Luckily they are finally starting to not include DVDs in combo packs anymore as more people would rather have a digital copy in its place.

When the wife and I bought our house around 18 months ago we looked at it while the previous tenants still lived here. What is now my media room was the guy before me's media room as well, and he was a MASSIVE horror movie fan. Horror posters, autographed photos, the works. Massive television. What did his movie collection look like though? A bunch of old DVDs and pirated ones burned to discs with tape labels on the side.

Most don't care about packaging or video quality. We are the weirdos. I always try and keep this in perspective.

My opinion is that DVD, Blu-ray, and UHD will all go extinct at about the same time. But replaced by what, who knows. Probably some total replacement for TV's as we know them.

I hope not, it's become the standard and it deserves to be.

4K is like a delicacy, and even if you could afford to eat caviar for every meal why would you want to?

I'm sorry, but what? This statement makes absolutely no sense. If something is available in 4K format there is literally zero reason to go for less. One can get tired of having caviar everyday. I'm having a hard time believing one can get tired of seeing films/shows truer to their source format.

If 4K is caviar, then I have eaten it every single day and still not tired of it. In fact, I'm hungry for more.
